AEA Announces a Global Pool of Auditors for the AEA Ammonia Certification System, including Bureau Veritas, DNV, EcoEngineers, EnergyLink Services, SGS China, and TÜV SÜD

(WASHINGTON D.C., August 25, 2026)—The Ammonia Energy Association (AEA) is pleased to announce that it has qualified an initial roster of auditors under the AEA Ammonia Certification System, from a global pool of verification and validation bodies including Bureau Veritas, DNV, EcoEngineers, EnergyLink Services, SGS China, and TÜV SÜD. Qualified auditors from these six organizations are ready to support participants in AEA’s ongoing pilot program by providing independent verification that environmental attributes are correctly assigned and the chain of custody model is correctly applied.

The AEA Ammonia Certification System is a global certification system designed to facilitate the transparent, trusted international trade of low-emission ammonia. The system enables producers, traders, and consumers to demonstrate key environmental attributes – namely carbon footprint and origin – using independently verified data. To ensure credibility across the entire value chain, every participant must regularly audit its activities and inventories. This includes ammonia producers, for certificate generation, and also traders and consumers, for certificate transfers and retirements. Verification and validation bodies (VVBs, also known as certification bodies) perform this auditing function, supporting the system’s principles of integrity, transparency, impartiality, and accuracy.

Following the publication of system documents and launch of a global registry in late 2025, the qualification of auditors represents the final implementation step before facilities can be established in the registry and ammonia certificates can be issued as part of the pilot. The pilot remains open to new participants and additional auditors. Contact information for qualified auditors is available at ammoniaenergy.org/certification.

Each of the qualified VVBs has met the requirements of the system, including accreditation by its national accreditation body, and its auditors have completed training to ISO 14064-3 regarding verification and validation of greenhouse gas statements, as well as training with the AEA specific to the AEA Ammonia Certification System.

As companies adhere to both voluntary and global policies, they are required to document embedded emissions for market access, and buyers seek chain-of-custody tracking for low-emission ammonia. Downstream customers, such as fertiliser producers and shipping firms, face pressure to verify emissions in their supply chains as they decarbonise. Credible verification is essential.”

The AEA Ammonia Certification System pilot encompasses both pre-certification of facilities that have not yet been built, and certification of ammonia produced at facilities that are already operational. Certificates are held and transferred on a global ammonia registry, enabling full disclosure to the consumer of the environmental attributes of ammonia and supporting demonstration of compliance with regional or global requirements for emission reductions.
