Texas-based Lummus Technology and California-based Ammobia have signed a new agreement to licence and deploy Ammobia’s next-generation ammonia production technology. The technology, dubbed “Haber-Bosch 2.0”, delivers a capital-efficient synthesis loop (synloop), low-cost ammonia production, and versatility in energy source. The modular design presents the opportunity for medium-sized ammonia production plants to decrease the global reliance on traditional megaprojects in addition to retrofitting options.
Lummus and Ammobia are initially targeting 50-500 tons per day ammonia production plant operators looking to supply low-cost ammonia to sectors including maritime fuels and in-demand power generation.
Lummus will help de-risk and accelerate the roll out of Ammobia’s production process with an established customer base and globally demonstrated expertise in the engineering and technology aspects of developing process technologies. This is Lummus’ first venture into ammonia technology, which complements and integrates with its feedstock flexible hydrogen portfolio providing varied and flexible decarbonisation choices for customers.
Ammobia changes the economics of producing ammonia from any energy source and does it in modules rather than the world-scale plants that have defined this industry for a century. Customers can add capacity through a greenfield project or an upgrade to an existing operating site. Lummus brings the engineering rigor, project delivery, and global relationships required to deploy it, which lets Ammobia stay focused on advancing the core process. Together we can make ammonia’s newest applications, from resilient power to clean maritime fuel, commercially viable.
Karen Baert, Co-founder and CEO, Ammobia in her organisation’s press release, 27 Aug 2026
We have a long track record of partnering with innovators to scale breakthrough technologies that address the evolving needs of the global energy market. Ammobia’s technology is an important addition to Lummus’ portfolio and a leap forward for the industry. This cutting-edge solution has the power to transform ammonia production to be more economical and lower carbon, support emissions reductions in the shipping industry, and significantly reduce project costs.
Leon de Bruyn, President and CEO, Lummus Technology, in Ammobia’s press release, 27 Aug 2026
Ammobia’s technology boasts low-temperature (300°C) and relatively low-pressure (20 bar) ammonia production. The company integrates low-temperature ammonia catalysts with solid sorbents for ammonia separation for up to 80% single pass conversion in its reactor and predicts scale up to 50 kilograms per day plant (TRL 6) in 2026.
