Three separate offtake agreements with CF Industries, TalusAg and Fertiberia bring PepsiCo’s total offtake for low-carbon ammonia fertilizers to upwards of 345,000 tons per year. Including agreements with Yara, approximately 50% of PepsiCo Europe's fertilizer supply chain will be low-carbon by 2030.
Today, the LEAF Initiative launched publicly at COP30, with an Action Statement that the AEA supports, identifying three priorities for collective action.
Yara will supply both low-emission fertilizers and decarbonizations services to potato farmers in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina. The potatoes will be used in the production of Sabritas potato chips and other snack foods.
By 2030, Yara will supply 165,000 tons per year of “Yara Climate Choice fertilizers” to PepsiCo Europe for distribution to participating farmers. This volume will cover around 25% of PepsiCo’s fertilizer needs in Europe, focusing first on potato crops, and then moving into other key crops such as oats and corn.
“Green fertilizer” produced at Fertiberia’s Puertollano plant has been successfully used on barley & potato crops in Spain, paving the way for future supply chains. Both Heineken and PepsiCo are aiming to reduce agricultural emissions and intend to scale-up the use of green fertilizer, and Fertiberia is set to begin producing low-carbon fertilizer at its other Spanish production centres.
