With the commercialization of Ammonia-fueled engines in 2024 and 2025, the adoption of ammonia as maritime fuel is taking off. The number of vessels that will operate on ammonia provide clear signals to both ammonia producers and infrastructure providers that ammonia bunkering capacity will be required. Key insights As of September 2024, 96 ammonia-fueled vessels […]

Trafigura completes its first ship-to-ship transfer of ammonia
Trafigura reports its first successful ship-to-ship transfer of ammonia has taken place in the Straits of Gibraltar. Around 6,000 tons of ammonia being shipped from CF Industries’ Donaldsonville complex in Louisiana was transferred between gas carriers, before being delivered to Fertiberia in Spain for the production of feritliser.
Onto the next phase for ammonia: message from the outgoing AEA President
In my last message as AEA President, I wish to convey my sincere gratitude to the membership and AEA staff. I am excited to see the industry moving into its next phase, and will be proud to support incoming President Vibeke Rasmussen as the AEA strides forward in its current and future initiatives: certification, advocacy, safety and public perception.
Ammonia-fueled vessels: shipyard orders and new concepts
Eastern Pacific Shipping’s on-order very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) will be registered in Singapore, thanks to a new partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority. Trafigura has announced the first of its ammonia-fueled, medium gas carriers will be delivered from South Korea in 2027. In Japan, K LINE and MAN are leading a 5-party collaboration to develop ammonia fueled-engines and deploy them in 200,000 dwt bulk carriers. We also explore ammonia-fueled Aframaxes in Malaysia, a concept study for a large-volume, coastal ammonia carrier in Japan, and a new salmon fishing vessel design in Norway.
The path ahead for marine ammonia fuel: 2024 and beyond
For our final episode of Maritime Ammonia Insights, we take stock of the progress of marine ammonia fuel to date, and ask what comes next. Meet Fürstenberg Maritime Advisory to learn about upcoming key decision points at the IMO, communications strategies for marine ammonia, current safety gaps, and priorities for 2024 as we work towards the first demonstrations of marine ammonia fuel.
All hands to the pump: every stakeholder needed to support marine ammonia fuel
For our final episode of Maritime Ammonia Insights, we asked our resident experts Sofia and Conor Fürstenberg Stott to provide their insights on the pathway forward for marine ammonia fuel. Discussion topics included challenges for overlaying alternative fuels onto the existing bunker industry, the importance of seafarers to the transition, and why we need to move beyond talking about competition between alternative fuel candidates.
We do it safely, or not at all: the marine ammonia fuel journey
In our latest episode of Maritime Ammonia Insights, Matt Dunlop (MMMZCS) and Samie Parkar (Lloyd’s Register’s) stepped us through key outcomes of a new, comprehensive safety study for ammonia-fuelled shipping. Combining Quantitative Risk Analysis with Human Factors analysis, a series of risk mitigation & worker training recommendations provides a path forward for the safe operations of ammonia-fuelled vessels.
Risk analysis for ammonia-fueled vessels
Hear from the authors of a new joint study into ammonia safety onboard ships. The study is the most comprehensive to-date on the effectiveness of risk mitigation measures applied to ammonia-fueled vessels, pairing Quantitative Risk Assessment with an analysis of human factors.
The NH3 Kraken: Amogy’s ammonia-powered tugboat
As part of our Maritime Ammonia Insights series, we explore progress onboard the NH3 Kraken, Amogy’s ammonia-powered tug being developed in New York state. We heard updates on vessel retrofits, design points, project partners, the ongoing relationship with the US Coast Guard, HAZOP assessments, regulatory work and the remaining challenges before the tug hits the water for operational trials. Amogy’s Abigail Jablanksky and Chief Safety Solutions’ Herbert Fowlkes joined Conor Furstenberg Stott in conversation.
