US-based Plug Power will supply 275 MW of its GenEco Electrolyzer Systems to project developer Hy2gen for its Courant Decarbonized Ammonium Nitrate plant in Québec, Canada. Plug has also been awarded the Front-End Engineering Design contract for the project.
Located in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, the plant will be adjacent to deep-water port facilities, has access to key electricity grid connections (and hydroelectricity supply), enjoys strong local stakeholder support, and will supply locally-made ammonium nitrate explosives for the mining industry in Québec, Central and Eastern Canada, and beyond.
Project Courant was launched in 2021, and is one of a number of projects in Hy2gen’s portfolio. It will have an annual output of 530,000 tons of ammonium nitrate, and Hy2gen is aiming for FID in 2027.
Being selected as the electrolyzer supplier for Hy2gen’s Courant project underscores Plug’s ability to support large-scale hydrogen and hydrogen-derived products. This project reflects growing demand for proven electrolyzer technology and experienced partners capable of supporting complex, high-capacity developments required for industrial decarbonization. In choosing Plug, Hy2gen has also recognized our unique ability to serve projects of this large magnitude thanks to Plug’s state-of-the-art gigafactory.
Jose Luis Crespo, President and CEO of Plug, in his organisation’s official press release, 2 Apr 2026
Congratulations to our team on reaching this important milestone for our Project COURANT. Canada has shown a strong commitment to advancing reindustrialization and building its own strategic supply chains for local industry. This is exactly the right environment in which renewable hydrogen derivatives like ammonium nitrate can thrive, as they make supply chains less dependent on imported fossil fuels. We have taken on this major task and we deliver by showing consistent progress with project COURANT. It is very important to us to repay the trust put into us here. That is why we are looking forward to reaching FID within the next year and beginning construction.
