Austria-based developer to work with GIZ on Project Gaucho
Launched in November in the presence of national and state government officials, RP Global and German development agency GIZ will develop a new ammonia mega-project in Argentina. In the first stage of Project Gaucho, 3 GW of electrolysers will be powered by a 4.2 GW wind farm, leading to the production of up to 1.7 million tons of ammonia per year. Located in Santa Cruz province, ammonia from Project Gaucho will be exported to Europe. The pair will now proceed to a technical and economic analysis of the potential hydrogen production chain, a study on biodiversity and water in the Santa Cruz region, an analysis of the regulations in force in Argentina, and explore local capacity building.
We recognise the scale of the challenge ahead, and we are ready to embrace it. This partnership goes beyond identifying optimal wind sites and building facilities – it’s about upholding the highest environmental, social, and safety standards. From planning import and export facilities at local harbours to organising robust logistics for green hydrogen plant construction and operation, our goal is to create a shared infrastructure that benefits both local communities and the broader hydrogen sector. We are also committed to contributing to the development of clear regulations to support Argentina’s renewable hydrogen future.
Igor Reščec, CTO of RP Global, in his organisation’s official press release, 2 Dec 2024
The partnership was facilitated by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) as part of its “International Hydrogen Ramp-Up Programme” (or H2Uppp). The matchmaker program aims to help German and European companies to enter into cooperation partnerships along the hydrogen value chain, producing renewable hydrogen and derivatives around the world for export back to Europe. The program targets entrepreneurial efforts and early-stage project development. Applications are still open until February 2025.
