Talus, Minbos to deploy modular ammonia production in Angola
By Julian Atchison on July 02, 2024
The pair have agreed to deploy Talus’ modular, renewable powered ammonia production technology at the Capanda Green Ammonia Project: a hydropower ammonia and fertiliser facility under-development by Minbos Resources in Angola. Talus will supply the units on a “ Build Own Operate (BOO) basis”, funding the capital costs of ammonia production in return for a long-term offtake agreement. Talus has already deployed modular production units in Kenya and the USA.
Utilising Minbos’ already-negotiated access to cheap Angolan hydropower (1.1 cent per kWh) and an adjacent phosphate production project (also owned by Minbos), CAN, AN and NPK compound fertilisers can be produced for the fast-growing domestic agricultural market in Angola, which currently does not have any primary fertiliser production capacity. The agreement also indicates that blasting agents can also be produced from the ammonia for the mining sector: another growing industry in Angola. We’ve recently seen renewable blasting agent announcements in Arkansas and Spain.
The Talus modular technology and BOO model will massively reduce our funding commitment to produce Nitrogen fertilizers in Angola. Talus offers an accelerated path to green ammonia production, flexible low capital solution that can be deployed at a range of scales, in different locations, to produce different products. The technology neatly matches Angola’s opportunities with its markets. There is much more to come in this story.
Minbos Resources MD Lindsay Reed in his organisation’s official press release, 28 June 2024
We are thrilled to partner with Minbos to locally manufacture fertilizers essential for agriculture and chemicals crucial to modern mining operations. Talus’ containerised green ammonia solutions decrease the cost and increase the sustainability of reliability of ammonia. Powered by Minbos’ renewable energy concession and combined with its additional mineral assets we believe that we can materially impact food security and carbon emissions in Angola and the region.
