Trammo to offtake renewable ammonia from northern Australia
By Julian Atchison on August 06, 2024
Up to 100% of production from Allied Green Ammonia
Under a new MoU, Trammo will purchase up to 100% of renewable ammonia produced by Allied Green Ammonia (AGA) in the Northern Territory, Australia. Trammo anticipates that the first ammonia sales will occur in late 2028. The 950,000 tons per year project was first launched in November 2023, and in May this year AGA signed an agreement with Plug Power to secure and deploy 3 GW-worth of PEM electrolysers for hydrogen production.
Trammo currently owns a market share of more than 20% of global seaborne ammonia, operating a fleet of up to fourteen semi and fully-refrigerated ammonia carriers. It is also involved in ammonia distribution via river barges, pipelines and inland storage, particularly in the US and China. In May, Trammo agreed to charter up to five newbuild, dual-fuel gas carriers under construction by China-based shipowner Wideshine. WinGD will supply its dual-fuel engines for the vessels, with the engines to be delivered to China from 2026.
We are delighted to sign this MOU and partner with AGA. Both companies aim to develop clean and decarbonized solutions for global consumers, and this MOU is consistent with Trammo’s active role in the transition to decarbonizing the ammonia industry by helping to make available in the market significant volumes of green ammonia by 2030.

SPG Steiner to supply ammonia storage tanks at Gove
And in further news for AGA’s project, Germany-based EPC firm SPG Steiner will supply two 40,000 ton, cryogenic tanks to store ammonia production before offtake by Trammo. The tanks will feature a full containment, double-wall design with an associated refrigeration system to allow ammonia storage at near-ambient pressure.
Our extensive track record, state-of-the-art design, advanced welding techniques, and comprehensive knowledge of ammonia’s stress corrosion cracking ensure the highest safety and quality. Our partnership with AGA extends our commitment to clean energy solutions worldwide, now including Australia.
