Unmanned ammonia engine room gets tick of approval
The American Bureau of Shipping has granted AiP for two new autonomous technology packages developed by Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and Hyundai Heavy Industries: an unmanned ammonia engine room, plus an AI safety package with rapid-response capabilities.
Marine momentum: AiPs for bunkering, fuel systems and vessels
A series of new AiPs underlines momentum for marine ammonia fuel. For bunkering, barges and a range of jetty-less transfer terminals will enable safe operations. Fuel systems that can be retrofitted to existing vessels are also under development, as is an ammonia-powered “feeder” container vessel to complement larger designs.
MadoquaPower2X: Renewable hydrogen and ammonia for Iberian, European and global markets
Meet MadoquaPower2X, a renewable hydrogen and ammonia project under development in Sines, southern Portugal. Starting from 2028, around 50,000 tons of renewable hydrogen will be produced to generate around 300,000 tons of decarbonized ammonia, targeting the maritime fuel and fertilizer markets in Europe and beyond.
IMO moves forward with interim guidelines for ammonia fuel use
Approval of interim guidelines for the use of maritime ammonia fuel is anticipated at an upcoming IMO committee meeting in December, giving the shipping industry its first international standard for the safe operation of vessels using marine ammonia fuel.
Hyphen Hydrogen Energy: Establishing Namibia’s renewable hydrogen and ammonia industry
Meet Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, a renewable ammonia developer focused on production projects in Namibia. Hyphen’s current focus is a project featuring up to 2 million tons of ammonia each year near Port Lüderitz on Namibia’s southwest coast. Hyphen has already secured multiple offtake contracts, and will supply European customers using Chane’s Port of Rotterdam import infrastructure.
Hanwha Power Systems: deploying ammonia gas turbines onboard vessels
Hanwha Power Systems and GasLog will develop a comprehensive demonstration plan for the retrofit of existing large LNG carriers to be powered by ammonia gas turbines.
Consortium aims for ammonia bunkering on US east coast by 2030
The American Bureau of Shipping has awarded AiP to a new ammonia bunkering articulated tug-barge design. The bunker barge will be compatible with several ammonia-powered vessels under development, and will begin commercial operations on the US east coast by 2030.
NH3 Kraken sails on the Hudson River
After a multi-year development process, Amogy has sailed its retrofitted tugboat for the first time on the Hudson River, north of New York City, fueled by renewable ammonia.
