Phelan Green Energy: renewable ammonia in Peru
Ireland-based Phelan has announced it will develop a $2.4 billion hydrogen and ammonia production project in Peru, based on solar energy generation in the Arequipa region. The project will initially produce 440,000 tons per year of renewable ammonia, with scale up plans already in place to boost production to 1 million tons capacity.
Viking Energy vessel awarded AiP
The Norwegian Maritime Authority has approved the ammonia fuel system design to be deployed onboard the platform supply vessel Viking Energy. The system will directly feed 2 MW of solid oxide fuel cells, allowing for long-range, high power sailing of up to 3,000 hours per year.
$37 billion in Egyptian ammonia investments
More than $37 billion will be invested across the initial stages of hydrogen and ammonia production projects, ranging in location from the Gulf of Suez to west of the Nile Delta. A series of agreements concerning existing and newly-announced projects were signed at the recent Egypt-EU Investment Conference.
Ammonia marine fuel supply systems: Wärtsilä and Amogy
Wärtsilä Gas Solutions will now provide the ammonia fuel supply and cargo handling systems for all six of EXMAR’s dual-fuel vessels being built in South Korea. Meanwhile, Amogy and Mitsubishi have completed concept designs for two onboard systems: a powertrain combining ammonia cracking and hydrogen fuel cell for ships, and a hydrogen supply facility to provide hydrogen as pilot fuel to an ammonia-fueled engine.
Trafigura completes its first ship-to-ship transfer of ammonia
Trafigura reports its first successful ship-to-ship transfer of ammonia has taken place in the Straits of Gibraltar. Around 6,000 tons of ammonia being shipped from CF Industries’ Donaldsonville complex in Louisiana was transferred between gas carriers, before being delivered to Fertiberia in Spain for the production of feritliser.
Höegh LNG, Deutsche ReGas to develop floating ammonia cracker
The pair will develop a new ammonia import hub in north Germany on the Baltic Sea coastline. The terminal will feature a floating ammonia cracker, producing around 30,000 tons of hydrogen per year for injection into the German Hydrogen Core Network.
World Bank to provide a further $1.5 billion for Indian renewable projects
The new loan from the World Bank will go towards programs that support the production of hydrogen via electrolysis, as well as the manufacture of electrolyser units themselves. In June 2023, an initial $1.5 billion was provided from the World Bank to assist implementation of key hydrogen policy measures in India.
