LEAD: Low-Emission Ammonia Plants
The AEA’s Low-Emission Ammonia Plants database contains details on all the low-emission (and transitional) ammonia production plants that have been announced. This provides updates on project implementation and insights regarding the future availability of low-emission ammonia.
The full dataset can now be browsed through the map below.
The database is growing quickly and now includes 464 projects (with 578 phases of expansion), comprising a total of 438.1 million tons of ammonia capacity. Even since the last update in August 2024, the capacity we are tracking has increased by 65.6 million tons.
By 2030, we realistically expect 35.7 million tons of this capacity to be operational:
- 3.7 million tons is already Operational (up to Q4 2024)
- 11.8 million tons is Firm (eg, construction / FID)
- 20.2 million tons is Mature (eg, offtake / EPC)
Key conclusions
- Within the large funnel of projects, a significant number of projects are maturing to meet the ammonia energy demand.
- Clear demand signals and regulatory certainty will be required to move more of these projects towards FID.
