Germany’s updated national hydrogen strategy forecasts that hydrogen demand in the country will skyrocket by 2045, including new demand for hydrogen and ammonia power generation. An auction process ending in 2026 will spur the construction of 4.4 GW of “sprinter” power plants around the country, generating electricity from pure hydrogen or ammonia. This will support the continued integration of renewable energy into Germany’s national grid.

Green ammonia: Key for the German energy transition
To reach climate neutrality by 2045, Germany needs large amounts of green hydrogen and its derivatives. Green ammonia is set to become the first derivative received in large numbers in the short- to medium term and is set to play a crucial role in the decarbonisation as both transport medium and in direct use. The newly updated German hydrogen strategy highlights this and sets concrete targets and proposes actions. Highlights from the EU debate on H2 certification
Climate mitigation is key driver for H2 roadmaps and policies. Regulatory framework still in its infancy, but it will evolve dynamically. In 1st phase, H2 GHG emission (and other sustainability) standards must take into account the still high level of power sector emissions in EU and elsewhere, and the need to get the clean H2 market up and running. But in the medium term, GHG emission standards will get closer and closer to true climate neutrality. I personally would anticipate this and would not advise to make long term investments in “grey-green” or “grey-blue” H2 => It might be accepted…
