    2025: an ammonia energy rollercoaster

    Julian Atchison December 17, 2025

Despite the successes and progress made in 2025, the year remains a missed opportunity for ammonia energy. The first complete supply chains for renewable ammonia are emerging, and some 600,000 tons of annual production capacity is set to be online in northeast China early next year. Maritime engines, cracking, and power & heat technology solutions also made their mark, moving from feasibility into deployment. But disappointing outcomes at the IMO and government support that failed to spark market development remains an issue, with plenty of critical, detail-heavy work ahead of us in 2026.

CMB.TECH invests in Energy China’s emerging ammonia supply chain

    Julian Atchison December 17, 2025

CMB.TECH has signed an off-take agreement for renewable ammonia produced by Energy China at its now-operational Songyuan project in Jilin Province, northeast China. CMB.TECH will also acquire a minority stake in Jiangsu Andefu (ADF) one of China's largest ammonia supply chain companies and China’s first exporter of liquid ammonia in 2011.

Complete supply chains: renewable ammonia production, transport, and export infrastructure in northern China

    Kevin Rouwenhorst November 11, 2025

State-owned conglomerate Energy China and logistics and terminal specialist ADF are establishing a renewable ammonia supply chain in northeast China. In our recent episode of Project Features, we explored the Songyuan production project, and ADF’s planned scale-up of ammonia storage and transport facilities across China’s coast.

Energy China: renewable ammonia production, transport, and export infrastructure

    Julian Atchison

Meet China Energy Engineering Group (Energy China) and logistics and terminal specialist Jiangsu Andefu (ADF), two partners in an emerging renewable ammonia supply chain in northeast China. Energy China’s Songyuan project is expected to produce a combined 800,000 tons of renewable ammonia and methanol annually at full scale. Energy China also co-owns an ammonia storage terminal at Panjin Port along with ADF, and in 2024 jointly initiated the establishment of the “Northeast Asia Green Bunkering Fuel Supply Chain Alliance”.

Energy China: 200,000 tons of renewable ammonia capacity online this September

    Kevin Rouwenhorst July 06, 2025

Phase one of China Energy Engineering Group’s Songyuan project will come online this September, producing 200,000 tons per year of RFNBO-compliant ammonia. Ammonia produced in Songyuan (and Energy China’s other major renewable project in Chifeng) will be transported to Panjin Port, where Energy China co-owns a large-scale ammonia storage terminal.

    Renewable ammonia progresses in China

    Julian Atchison July 08, 2024

Sungrow Hydrogen will provide alkaline electrolysers for a new hydrogen and ammonia project in Jilin province. China Energy Engineering Corporation is leading development of the project, which will produce 600,000 tons of renewable ammonia each year. In Inner Mongolia, construction has begun on a similar-sized plant, which will produce ammonia from wind and solar energy.

China Energy: foreign investments in ammonia

    Julian Atchison May 17, 2023

State-owned enterprise China Energy has announced new ammonia initiatives in three countries, with a reported budget of $20 billion to invest outside China over the next few years. A partnership with Petrobras in Brazil, construction of a new renewable ammonia mega-project in Morocco, and a construction start date for a renewable ammonia plant next to the Suez Canal in Egypt have all been announced in the last few weeks.
