In the transition to a low-carbon energy economy, renewable power generation is pivotal, but reliable energy provision requires long-term, sustainable energy storage solutions. Ammonia’s relatively high energy density, existing global infrastructure, and established manufacturing and distribution system make it an attractive alternative energy carrier. However, as new applications emerge, thorough risk assessments and control measures are necessary to minimize health and environmental risks. Accelerating maritime decarbonization via multi-sectoral integration

In addition to its role as a low-carbon maritime fuel, seaborne trade of ammonia will play a key role in global, economy-wide decarbonization. Therefore, marine ports are emerging as likely future hubs for low-carbon ammonia, both as cargo and as a fuel. In many ports, adjacent industries such as refining, chemicals, and land-based freight transport offer additional offtake opportunities for both low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia, and hydrogen offers solutions for decarbonization of port operations. As multi-modal, global-scale trade and demand centers, marine ports have the potential to serve as epicenters and integrators for low-carbon ammonia and hydrogen industrial clusters.

Program on combustion of ammonia and ammonia-hydrogen mixtures for power generation

GTI Energy and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) have embarked on fundamental and applied investigations of ammonia as an alternative energy carrier under a joint program known as Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI). Focus is on applications under turbine operating conditions for both ammonia and ammonia-hydrogen mixtures. Participating teams members include the University of Central Florida (UCF), Georgia Institute of Technology and CRAFT Tech. Experimental, conceptual designs of combustors and computational efforts are underway since late 2021 and results to-date will be presented. A Fuel Standard for Ammonia: panel wrap-up from the Ammonia Energy Conference 2020

What are the key considerations for a future Ammonia Fuel Standard? On November 17, 2020, the Ammonia Energy Association (AEA) hosted a panel discussion moderated by Ron Stanis from GTI (Gas Technology Institute), as well as panel members David Richardson from Airgas, Rob Steele from EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute), Eric Smith from IIAR (International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration), and Dorthe Jacobsen from MAN Energy Solutions at the recent Ammonia Energy Conference. The AEA Fuel Standard Committee has been developing a draft product specification that will facilitate the acceptance of ammonia as a fuel. The overall message from panelists came through loud and clear: the draft standard is ready for stakeholder comments, and the Fuel Standard Committee welcomes your input.

Low-Carbon Fuels for Power Generation

The EPRI-GTI Low Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI) has nine technical subcommittees. The Power Generation subcommittee currently has 26 active members representing electric, gas and combined electric & gas utilities as well as two gas turbine Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM). Studies, testing and demonstration projects utilizing hydrogen and ammonia as alternate low-carbon energy carriers dominates member interests with hydrogen being most significant. Next steps will include scoping specific topics for “no-regret” studies and soliciting inputs for creating a five-year power generation roadmap. EPRI, GTI Launch Low-Carbon Initiative

Last month the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) announced a new undertaking: the Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI). According to the organizations’ press release, over the next five years they will work together and with collaborating companies to “accelerate the development and demonstration of low-carbon energy technologies.”

EPRI Releases Ammonia Energy Report

Last month the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) released Renewable Ammonia Generation, Transport, and Utilization in the Transportation Sector, the organization’s first public treatment of ammonia energy. The report is positioned as a communique from the cutting edge – a “Technology Insights Brief” from EPRI’s “Innovation Scouts” – and, bracingly, manages to be both brief and comprehensive. Within its format, it does an excellent job of conveying the positive case for ammonia energy and the R&D that will allow it to reach its potential.
