    More than 50 leaders across the shipping value chain joined a Call to Action to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission fuels. Amongst the signatories of the Call to Action was Fortescue, which now has partnerships with Höegh Autoliners and COSCO Shipping to accelerate the deployment of ammonia-powered vessels.

    Enova funding for maritime ammonia: Amon Gas and Höegh Autoliners

    New funding from the Norwegian government will assist two maritime ammonia developers: Amon Gas and Höegh Autoliners. Amon has confirmed orders for two ammonia-powered, mid-sized gas carriers, while Höegh will establish an ammonia fuel supply chain to ensure its Aurora Class car carriers can run on ammonia fuel on delivery in 2027.

    Sumitomo will supply clean ammonia fuel for Hoegh Autoliners’ future fleet of ammonia-fueled PCTC vessels at the ports of Jacksonville and Singapore from 2027. Also on the Atlantic US coast, Sumitomo is part of a consortium conducting a feasibility study on ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering at the Port of Savannah.

    Höegh expects the first pair of ammonia-powered car carriers to be delivered late next year from China Merchants Heavy Industry at the Jiangsu Shipyard in China. This month, a new LNG/ammonia tank was installed in the first of the vessels, and MAN ES engines have arrived from Korea, with installation to take place in early December. Höegh has also announced a partnership with Yara Clean Ammonia to develop a future supply of ammonia fuel for the vessels.

    North Ammonia to supply ammonia fuel for Höegh Autoliners’ fleet

    Norway-based North Ammonia will supply at least 100,000 tonnes per year of ammonia fuel to Höegh Autoliners from 2030, powering their future fleet of Aurora class car carriers. Grid-based electrolysis will feed production of ammonia in Eydehavn on Norway’s south coast, with bunkering to take place somewhere in the Amsterdam-Rotterdam Antwerp area. In more maritime ammonia news out of Norway this week, Skarv Shipping will receive government funding to develop cargo vessels featuring ammonia-powered, four-stroke engines.

    Ammonia-powered vessels & maritime engines: development updates

    This week we explore four announcements in the maritime ammonia space:

    • Færder Tankers Norway will receive $20 million in Enova funding to develop two ammonia-powered vessel designs: a tanker and a car carrier.
    • Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has completed a conceptual design for an LPG-ammonia dual-fuel VLGC, with Approval in Principle granted by ClassNK.
    • Delivery dates have been set for the first eight of Höegh Autoliners’ Aurora-class, ammonia-powered car carriers, with China Merchants Heavy Industry to deliver vessels from late 2024.
    • WinGD and Hyundai Heavy Industries will collaborate to deliver the first WinGD two-stroke engine capable of running on ammonia by 2025.

    Ammonia-ready vessels: new contracts & deliveries in China

    This week we explore a trio of announcements out of China:

    1. The ammonia-ready vessel Kriti Future has been delivered to owners Avin International.

    2. Höegh Autoliners has contracted China Merchants Heavy Industry to build at least four of their new ammonia-ready vessel design: the Aurora-class car carrier. The new builds will meet requirements for DNV GL's methanol and ammonia-ready notation guides.

    3. And Swiss-based shipping giant MSC has placed an order for six ammonia-ready container ships from Dalian Shipbuilding in China. The vessels will be powered by WinGD dual-fuel engines, for which retrofits will be available by 2024/5 to run on methanol and ammonia.
