GIC & Hy24 will invest $115 million to accelerate the deployment of InterContinental Energy’s portfolio of ammonia mega-projects. In the USA, Electric Hydrogen has closed a $380 million Series C funding round, accelerating plans to build a gigafactory in Massachusetts and deliver its first PEM electrolysers in 2024.
Western Green Energy Hub and KEPCO: renewable mega-ammonia in Western Australia
Set to reach FID in 2027, the WGEH project will seek to utilise local wind & solar resources and policy incentives in Western Australia to deliver up to 20 million tonnes of renewable ammonia annually. Korea Electric Power Corporation has agreed to jointly develop the project.
Progress in Oman mega-projects
Hydrom (Hydrogen Oman) has signed commercial term sheets and allocated land to a series of important ammonia export projects being developed in the Gulf nation. Green Energy Oman is one of three project consortia granted land near Duqm in the country’s south, with further allocations expected in the coming months. Also in Duqm, ENGIE & POSCO have launched a million-tonne-per-year ammonia production project, with the full production output to be exported to Korea over the forty year operational lifetime of the plant.
Shell takes key role in Oman ammonia supergiant
Shell will acquire a 35% stake and operatorship of the Green Energy Oman (GEO) project, a 25 GW renewable ammonia supergiant under development on the Oman coast. The news is the latest in a series of ammonia energy announcements from the oil & gas majors.

bp to acquire majority stake & operatorship of Asian Renewable Energy Hub
bp will acquire a 40.5 percent equity stake in and become operator of the Asian Renewable Energy Hub, after reaching an agreement with project partners InterContinental Energy, CWP Global and Macquarie Capital. At full-scale AREH will feature production of up to 9 million tonnes of renewable ammonia per year for export.
Aramco targets 11 million tonnes of low-carbon ammonia production by 2030
Aramco is targeting production of 11 million tonnes per year of low-carbon ammonia by 2030, among a raft of new sustainability goals announced this week. Aramco’s target for renewable energy generating capacity target (12 GW) will be met by its involvement in the new ammonia Supergiant the Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy Hub, but the source of low-carbon ammonia production is not yet clear.

InterContinental Energy, OQ and Enertech announced a number of key development updates last week for their 25 GW Green Energy Oman (“GEO”) project. Three specialist organisations have been contracted to perform feasibility, engineering & impact assessment work, and new details were announced about the project’s location, including a potential site for ammonia production on the Oman coast.
Singapore invests in key green ammonia projects
Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC has agreed to a strategic equity investment in InterContinental Energy, who are currently developing a number of green ammonia "Supergiants". GIC's announcement follows another significant green investment by Singapore, this time in Indonesia. $9 billion will fund a logistics hub in Jakarta and a number of renewable energy projects, with MoUs signed between the heads of state to cement a new focus on decarbonisation and alternative energies
The Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy Hub
InterContinental Energy have just announced their fourth ammonia "Supergiant": the Saudi Arabia Renewable Energy Hub (SAREH). At this stage details are limited, but the new collaboration between InterContinental, Saudi Aramco and Modern Industrial Investment Holding Group forms part of a wider decarbonisation push by the Kingdom. Aramco's ultimate goal is to achieve net-zero for Scope 1 & 2 emissions across its wholly-owned operated assets by 2050.
KBR selected as technology partner for Oman green ammonia project
ACME has selected KBR to provide ammonia synthesis technology for its new green hydrogen & ammonia production facility to be built in Duqm, Oman. The project was first announced in March 2021, and has now grown to $3.5 billion in investment size, with energy to be provided by 3 GW of solar panels and 0.5 GW onshore wind power. The 2,400 tonnes per day (or 0.9 million tonnes per year) renewable ammonia facility is planned to be operational in 2022.
bp & ARENA confirm feasibility of large-scale green ammonia production in Western Australia
bp and ARENA's eighteen-month feasibility study into the Geraldton Export-Scale Renewable Investment (GERI) project wrapped up this week - with encouraging results. The two organisations conclude that "Western Australia is an ideal place to develop large scale renewable energy assets that can in turn produce green hydrogen and/or green ammonia for domestic and export markets".
Another Green Supergiant for InterContinental Energy: 50 GW, 20 million tonnes of green ammonia capacity
The first three projects from InterContinental's portfolio have now been announced. In 2014 there was the Asian Renewable Energy Hub in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. This May we reported on the announcement of the Oman mega-project. And this week InterContinental announced its newest Green Supergiant (and the second to be located in Western Australia): the Western Green Energy Hub.

Green Ammonia at Oil and Gas Scale: Ammonia Energy Conference 2020 Keynote
What does green ammonia look like at oil and gas scale? To open the Ammonia Energy Conference 2020 - and give us some insights into this question - we were thrilled to welcome Alex Tancock, Managing Director of InterContinental Energy (ICE). Since 2014 ICE has been in the business of identifying the new generation of “Green Supergiants”: green hydrogen and green ammonia fusion projects based on large-scale renewable energy. Alex was excited to pass on the key lessons learnt from the development of ICE’s first publicized project - the Asian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH) in north-western Australia.

Green ammonia at oil and gas scale: the 15 GW Asian Renewable Energy Hub
The Asian Renewable Energy Hub will be a 6,500 square kilometer wind and solar farm in Australia's Pilbara desert, producing green ammonia for export beginning in 2027/28. This was recently reported as an investment of AU$ 22 billion (US$ 16 billion). As it says on its website, this is "renewable energy at oil and gas scale." Details recently entered the public domain regarding the project's upstream segment (power generation). Now, its downstream segment (green ammonia production) is coming into focus as well. InterContinental Energy, one of the project backers, represents the Asian Renewable Energy Hub as just one project within its $100+ billion, 50 million ton per year, green ammonia and green methanol production portfolio: "the largest and most advanced portfolio of green hydrogen projects worldwide."
Saudi Arabia to export renewable energy using green ammonia
Last week, Air Products, ACWA Power, and NEOM announced a $5 billion, 4 gigawatt green ammonia plant in Saudi Arabia, to be operational by 2025. Air Products, the exclusive off-taker, intends to distribute the green ammonia globally and crack it back to “carbon-free hydrogen” at the point of use, supplying hydrogen refueling stations. According to Air Products’ presentation on the project, “our focus is fueling hydrogen fuel cell buses and trucks.” This will be one of the first projects to be built in the industrial hub of NEOM, a futuristic “model for sustainable living.” NEOM is a key element in Vision 2030, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s plan to diversify the Saudi Arabian economy and reduce dependence on oil revenues. In other words, Saudi Arabia is establishing itself as “a global leader in green hydrogen production and green fuels.”
