Orica and Fertiberia demonstrate low-carbon blasting agent in Spain

    Julian Atchison June 18, 2024

Orica and Fertiberia have conducted a test blast of their low-carbon Technical Ammonium Nitrate product in Spain. To manufacture the TAN blasting agent, Orica used low-carbon ammonium nitrate produced by Fertiberia in Puertollano, Spain.

Orica & Origin: decarbonising production at Kooragang Island

    Julian Atchison July 18, 2023

Origin Energy has been awarded AUD70 million in funding from the Australian federal government to progress the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub. The electrolytic hydrogen facility will be located next door to project partner Orica’s existing complex on Kooragang Island in Newcastle, and the bulk of hydrogen produced will be used for ammonia production. Learn more from Orica (and take a tour of their site) at this year's APAC conference.

Fortescue, AGL to explore decarbonisation in the Hunter Valley

    Julian Atchison August 18, 2022

Australian energy giant AGL will team up with Fortescue Future Industries to explore the feasibility of industrial-scale production of renewable hydrogen & ammonia in the Hunter Valley near Newcastle, Australia. AGL’s existing Liddell power station is due to close next year and begin conversion into the Hunter Energy Hub, with grid-scale batteries, wind & solar generation, clean industry and hydrogen & ammonia production to replace the coal-fired facility. Origin Energy, Orica, Incitec Pivot Limited and Keppel Infrastructure are already exploring similar plans in the area, based on existing ammonia production plants at Kooragang Island near Newcastle.

Ammonia off-taker for H2U’s Gladstone project

    Julian Atchison April 13, 2022

The Hydrogen Utility and Orica will explore possibilities for an exclusive off-take & supply agreement. Renewable ammonia produced at H2U’s future production plant in Gladstone, Australia would supply Orica’s nearby manufacturing plant, which will use the ammonia to produce explosives and mining extraction chemicals for Australian & international mining customers. There is also the potential for an ammonia export terminal to be built by the pair, based on Orica’s existing ammonia storage infrastructure in Gladstone.

    Green ammonia from Kooragang Island

    Julian Atchison March 21, 2022

Orica and Origin Energy will collaborate on feasibility work and development of the Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub in Newcastle, Australia. A grid-connected, 55 MW electrolyser will produce green hydrogen from recycled water, with hydrogen to be fed into Orica’s existing ammonia production plant on Kooragang Island. Grid-connected hydrogen production facilities in Newcastle stand to gain access to surplus amounts of renewable electricity in the coming years, with huge commercial investment interest in the under-development Hunter-Central Coast Renewable Energy Zone.
