    • Samsung Heavy Industries’ ammonia-powered, ultra-large ammonia carrier design has been granted AiP by Korean Register.
    • Pherousa Green Shipping’s new fleet of six Ultramax vessels will be developed alongside partner OSM Thome.
    • And Avance Gas has triggered the option of two mid-sized LPG/ammonia carriers, noting growth in global seaborne ammonia trade.

    Cracking-based propulsion systems, new vessels on order

    Norwegian technology developer Pherousa announced that it has developed & validated an ammonia cracking-based propulsion system, with plans to order six Ultramax vessels fitted with the technology. Grieg Maritime has ordered up to four ammonia-ready bulk carriers from China State Shipbuilding Corporation for delivery in 2026. And a new container ship design has been unveiled by the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping.

    Ammonia cracking for maritime applications

    Swedish technology developer Metacon has delivered an ammonia cracking prototype unit to Pherousa Green Technologies in Norway for development of an ammonia-fed, zero emissions maritime propulsion system. The prototype itself was developed by Metacon subsidiary Helbio, who report the cracker achieves conversion rates of 99.3% with no ammonia slip, enabling it to feed a high-purity PEM fuel cell.
