FertigHy: reducing dependence on fossil-based fertilizers in Europe

    Kevin Rouwenhorst March 16, 2025

In our latest episode of Project Features, we explored the FertigHy consortium’s plans to construct its first grid-connected ammonia and fertilizer plant in northern France. Using electrolytic hydrogen produced from France’s renewable and nuclear-dominated grid, FertigHy will provide long-term, fixed-price fertilizer supplies to the EU, reducing dependence on imports. Technology licensor and project partner Stamicarbon explored considerations for low-emission ammonia plants, and the technology sets available.

FertigHy: reducing dependence on fossil-based fertilizers in Europe

    Julian Atchison

Meet FertigHy, a pan-European consortium that will build, own, and operate low-carbon fertilizer plants across the continent, starting with its first facility in northern France. Explore plans for the 500,000 tons per year facility, which will feature Stamicarbon technology.

Licensor selection picking up for renewable ammonia synthesis loops

    Kevin Rouwenhorst August 20, 2024

One of the key steps in project development is the selection of the licensor for the renewable ammonia synthesis loop. For renewable ammonia projects, licensors including KBR, Topsoe, Thyssenkrupp Uhde, Casale, and Stamicarbon offer a range of technologies and services covering small to large-scale ammonia production. We explore these different technology offerings, as well as the growing list of projects where they are being deployed.

Renewable ammonia & fertilizers in Sub-Saharan Africa

    Kevin Rouwenhorst December 06, 2022

In our December episode of Ammonia Project Features, our three guests focused on renewable ammonia production in Sub-Saharan Africa. Allan Manhanga (Sable Chemicals) took us through the story of renewable ammonia production in Zimbabwe from 1972 to 2015, and what is needed to restart the industry there. Ralph Koekkoek (MET Development) presented a new renewable ammonia & fertilizer project underway in Kenya, with a focus on local farmers and national food security. And Marcel Jacobs (African Hydrogen Partnership) emphasized the important role of organisations in raising awareness & de-risking future projects, particularly through approaches like the proposed East African Green Hydrogen and Fertilizer Corridor.

Stami Green Ammonia to play a key role in decarbonizing the fertilizer industry

    Mauricio Medici

Stamicarbon green ammonia technology is based on the proven Haber-Bosh process and a perfect match for Power to X small and medium size project. It unique operational conditions and lean process design lead to a compact plant configuration with a minimum foot print requirement and thus a very competitive Capex when compared to other technologies. Moreover, the relatively high operating pressure makes it possible to obtain a high conversion per path using a minimum volume of catalyst. Maire Tecnimont group is applying Stami Green Ammonia technology in two green feasibility study projects, Greenfield Nitrogen located in the heart of the…

If green ammonia, whence urea? Stamicarbon's Innovation Agenda

    Trevor Brown May 03, 2019

One of the most interesting unanswered questions surrounding green ammonia is this: what about urea? Last month, a major announcement by Stamicarbon ("the world market leader in design, licensing and development of urea plants") implies an answer: in the long-term context of climate change, urea as a fertilizer may simply need to be phased out. Stamicarbon announced its new Innovation Agenda at the company's "Future Day" event in Utrecht in April. Its Innovation Agenda covers three areas: speciality fertilizers, digitalization, and "Renewable production of fertilizer (using wind or solar energy to produce fertilizer)."
