First Ammonia, Uniper to cooperate on Texas production project
First Ammonia’s renewable ammonia project in Texas has taken another step, with commodity giant Uniper joining as project partner. Renewable ammonia will be produced for export from the Port of Victoria starting in 2026.
Greenko secures electrolysers, off-take for renewable projects in India
Greenko has ordered 140 MW of electrolysers from John Cockerill for its under-development renewable ammonia plant in northern India. Last year the pair agreed to build an electrolyser gigafactory in Kakinada, southern India, which will also be home to a Greenko renewable ammonia production plant. Phase one of the Kakinada project will produce 250,000 tonnes per year of renewable ammonia, with Uniper to act as exclusive off-taker for the ammonia product.
New ammonia import infrastructure under development across Europe (and beyond)
New import terminals, energy hubs, bunker facilities & upgrades to existing ammonia storage facilities are underway across Europe. This week, we explore new project announcements in Wilhelmshaven, Brunsbüttel, Rotterdam and Immingham. We visit Taiwan for another ammonia import terminal announcement, and look at a new partnership between thyssenkrupp and ADNOC to deploy large-scale cracking - the “last piece of the puzzle” for global ammonia trading.
New CCS partnerships in the USA
This week we explore three new partnerships for CCS-based ammonia production in the USA:
- CF Industries, ExxonMobil & EnLink Midstream, for decarbonisation of the Donaldsonville production plant in Louisiana.
- Air Liquide, Chevron, LyondellBasell, and Uniper for a new production facility on the Gulf Coast.
- And Tallgrass & Equinor for the potential production of hydrogen and ammonia across the USA, leveraging Tallgrass’ existing infrastructure network.
New ammonia import & export terminals
At Vlissingen in the Netherlands, Uniper & Vesta Terminals will explore the feasibility of developing a new ammonia import hub in northwest Europe, based on Vesta’s existing 60,000m3 ammonia storage facility. Also this week, Proton Ventures is currently developing a state-of-the-art ammonia export terminal for an oil & gas major in the UAE, which will feature the “biggest ammonia tanks ever built in the Middle East”.
More CCS projects announced for the US Gulf Coast
New US CCS ammonia announcements include: a new million-tonne-per-year facility for OCI in Texas, a new $2 billion production facility for CF Industries and Mitsui & Co. in Louisiana, multi-million-tonnes-per-year of production output for JERA, ConocoPhillips and Uniper on the Gulf Coast spread over multiple export projects, and FID reached for OCI’s decarbonisation project in Iowa.
Ammonia exports from Canada to Germany
German energy giants E.ON and Uniper have signed agreements to offtake 500,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia each from EverWind Fuel’s under-development project at Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, beginning from 2025. The backdrop for these offtake MoUs was the signing of a new bilateral agreement between the Canadian and German governments to establish a Transatlantic Canada-Germany supply corridor for hydrogen.
The first Russian-German low-carbon ammonia supply chain
Uniper and Novatek have signed a long-term supply agreement to transport up to 1.2 million tonnes of blue ammonia annually from Novatek's to-be-built blue ammonia plant in Siberia to Uniper's planned "climate-friendly" hydrogen hub in Wilhelmshaven.
Uniper explores off-take of green ammonia in Oman
In December last year DEME Concessions and OQ announced their new HYPORT® Duqm green ammonia project. The 250 - 500 MW facility (in the first instance) will harness wind and solar energy to produce green ammonia, which could then be easily exported from the adjacent port. This week DEME and OQ took another step by signing a key cooperation agreement with Uniper. The global energy giant will provide engineering services and negotiate an exclusive off-take agreement of green ammonia.
