Ammonia marine fuel supply systems: Wärtsilä and Amogy

Wärtsilä Gas Solutions will now provide the ammonia fuel supply and cargo handling systems for all six of EXMAR’s dual-fuel vessels being built in South Korea. Meanwhile, Amogy and Mitsubishi have completed concept designs for two onboard systems: a powertrain combining ammonia cracking and hydrogen fuel cell for ships, and a hydrogen supply facility to provide hydrogen as pilot fuel to an ammonia-fueled engine.

World Bank to provide a further $1.5 billion for Indian renewable projects

The new loan from the World Bank will go towards programs that support the production of hydrogen via electrolysis, as well as the manufacture of electrolyser units themselves. In June 2023, an initial $1.5 billion was provided from the World Bank to assist implementation of key hydrogen policy measures in India.

Renewable ammonia progresses in China

Sungrow Hydrogen will provide alkaline electrolysers for a new hydrogen and ammonia project in Jilin province. China Energy Engineering Corporation is leading development of the project, which will produce 600,000 tons of renewable ammonia each year. In Inner Mongolia, construction has begun on a similar-sized plant, which will produce ammonia from wind and solar energy.

Ameropa, Hygenco sign term sheet for renewable ammonia supply from India

JERA concludes successful co-firing trial at Hekinan

JERA and IHI have successfully concluded a large-scale ammonia co-firing trial at the Hekinan power station. For two months, 20% fuel substitution in the 1 GW-sized Unit 4 was achieved, with stable operations throughout. JERA aims to have commercial ammonia co-firing operations up and running by March 2025.

CertifHy pre-certification awarded to Greenko’s renewable project in India

CertifHy has awarded RFNBO pre-certification to Greenko subsidiary AM Green for its under-development hydrogen and ammonia production facility in southern India. By 2030, Greenko aims for a capacity of one million tons per year of electrolytic hydrogen, feeding the production of 5 million tons per year of ammonia.

Indian government outlines renewable ammonia subsidy scheme

The Solar Energy Corporation of India has released final details for the subsidy scheme, which will assist the decarbonisation of fertiliser production in India. Eleven renewable ammonia production projects will be matched to eleven fertiliser manufacturers in a reverse auction process, with annual tonnages and delivery schedules for ammonia already set.

Marine engines ordered, construction contracts signed

WinGD’s X‑DF‑A dual-fuel engines have been ordered by Singapore-based shipping giant AET for deployment onboard new Aframax tankers, being built in China. Fishing vessels operators Vardin and Framherji have ordered Wärtsilä 25 engines for a series of three fishing trawlers that will operate in the Faroe Islands. In construction news, CMB.TECH will build the Yara Eyde vessel for Yara and North Sea Container Line in China, with vessel delivery scheduled for mid-2026.

Lloyd’s Register: vessel AiP and development updates

Several ammonia-centric vessel designs were granted AiP at the recent Posidonia shipping exhibition in Greece. Lloyd’s Register approved designs including the world’s largest Very Large Ammonia Carrier, a container vessel and a gas carrier propelled by Amogy’s ammonia-to-power technology, a NO_X-compliant container vessel featuring a MAN ammonia engine, and an ammonia-powered Very Large Ore Carrier. Lloyd’s Register also recently approved H2SITE’s onboard ammonia cracking technology.
