Demonstrating CCS-based ammonia technologies in Japan

Our June episode of Ammonia Project Features focused on a new project in Niigata prefecture, which will demonstrate low-carbon, fossil-based ammonia production with a capacity of 500 tonnes per year. As part of the project, Japanese government organization JOGMEC will work with INPEX to develop enhanced gas recovery & CO2 sequestration monitoring technologies. Tsubame BHB will deploy its low-temperature, low-pressure ammonia synthesis technology based on an electride-supported catalyst developed at the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines: ammonia part of new environmental strategy

Mitsui OSK Lines has released an alternative fuel roadmap as part of its new environmental strategy, with a significant role for hydrogen & ammonia fuels starting from later this decade. The roadmap is complemented by a new strategic investment in ammonia fuel production in the US, and new partnerships in Singapore & Australia. Hyrasia One: mega-ammonia in Kazakhstan

The pre-FEED phase for Hyrasia One will conclude at the end of this year. The project expects to build a 2 million tonne per year renewable hydrogen (or 11 million tonnes per year ammonia) facility by 2032 both for local use and for the export market.

Study paves the way towards ammonia bunkering pilots in Singapore

The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation released the public findings from its Ammonia bunkering pilot safety study last month. Three potential pilot sites have been identified in Singapore, and a combined HAZID - QRA methodology has found that 400 operational and locational risks for ammonia bunkering were all classed as low or mitigable. New marine engine collaboration, safety systems and key AiPs awarded

A new MoU between WinGD and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will see the deployment of WinGD’s X-DF-A ammonia-fueled engines to a range of vessels. In Norway, Wärtsilä has unveiled a safety system designed for continuous onboard monitoring of ammonia leaks, featuring a staged combustion process to deal with accidental releases. And classification society DNV has awarded AiP to two significant ammonia-fueled vessel designs: the MS NoGAPs, and Viridis Bulk Carriers’ short sea bulk carrier.

India’s Oil & Natural Gas Corporation moves towards ammonia production

India’s state-owned oil and gas company ONGC will invest $13 billion to deploy 10 GW of renewable energy generation by 2030. At least 5 GW of this will be in Rajasthan, where ONGC and Greenko have an agreement to develop a million-tonne-per-year ammonia production facility. ONGC is considering a similar-sized ammonia facility in Karnataka, potentially powered with offshore wind.
