In an interview with media outlet TradeWinds, MAN Energy Solutions has indicated that a detailed testing program for its two-stroke marine ammonia engine began last week in Copenhagen. With safe, sustainable operations paramount, MAN is aiming for the test engine to operate on 100% ammonia fuel in all four cylinders by 2025.
The Norway-based technology developer has announced successful testing of a 6 kW, ammonia-fed solid oxide fuel cell unit. The test unit is seen as the “first building block” of a larger 100 kW module to be stacked & used for marine propulsion.
Yara and Bunker Holding will look to accelerate the supply of ammonia bunker fuel to first movers in the shipping industry, focusing on key trading routes and port locations. In Norway, Equinor and Azane Fuel Solutions will undertake a new project, aiming to demonstrate how Norway’s offshore sector can be decarbonised by 2030 via the use of clean ammonia fuel.
EnBW, VNG and Jera will jointly conduct a feasibility study to evaluate the construction of an ammonia cracker demonstration plant at the Port of Rostock. The port joins a list of European ports where large-scale ammonia cracking is being considered, or a demonstration plant has already been announced: Antwerp, Rotterdam, Wilhelmshaven, Liverpool and Immingham amongst others.
Yara Clean Ammonia will supply Cepsa with ammonia, and provide Cepsa access to its “global supply base and logistical footprint” so it can deliver ammonia to industrial & maritime customers in northwest Europe. The strategic partnership will also help realise a new green maritime corridor between Algeciras and Rotterdam.
Trammo will purchase & sell up to 100,000 tonnes per year of renewable ammonia from Iberdrola in Spain, starting in 2026. The agreement kickstarts a green hydrogen corridor linking southern and northern Europe, with Trammo to focus on ammonia sales to industrial customers.
Hy2gen and Plug Power’s renewable ammonia project will be part of a total 2.2 GW deployment across Finland, aiming to strategically utilise the country’s fast decarbonising grid and policy support at both national and EU level. Also in Finland, Flexens’ 300 MW hydrogen and ammonia project is expected to become operational in 2027, increasing the fraction of Europe’s ammonia and hydrogen needs produced locally.
The pair will join forces to promote the adoption of low-carbon ammonia fuel in the maritime sector, with an initial focus on US inland waterways transportation. Amogy has also signed a new agreement to explore the potential retrofit of vessels in Skansi’s offshore service supply fleet with its ammonia-to-power technology system.
