IHI & Vopak will explore the development and operation of large-scale ammonia terminals in Japan, focused on the cost-effective distribution of ammonia imports. In the Netherlands, Proton Ventures reports that work on the conversion of Vesta Terminal’s existing site into an ammonia import hub is on schedule for FID to be made by 2024. And in other Proton Ventures news, the organisation has been awarded a FEED contract with Geldof to develop an ammonia terminal in Western Africa.

NYK Line: progress on tugboat conversion in Yokohama
NYK reports the retrofitting of the LNG-fueled tugboat Sakigake has begun in Yokohama. An ammonia-fueled engine developed by IHI Power Systems, NYK, Japan Engine Corporation and Nihon Shipyard will replace the conventional system on board, with the tug due to hit the water by 2024. NYK & Chilean copper producer CODELCO have also announced they are developing an ammonia-powered Handymax bulk carrier, aiming to develop a fleet to service the cross-Pacific copper trade.
Namikata Terminal to be repurposed into an ammonia-ready clean energy hub
Led by Mitsubishi, a new seven-member council will seek to transform Namikata Terminal in southern Japan into an ammonia-focused clean energy hub. The hub will handle over 1 million tonnes of ammonia annually, receiving imports from production hotbeds such as Corpus Christi & Lake Charles on the US Gulf Coast.
Ammonia fuel for glass production demonstrated in Japan
Asahi Glass Corporation announced it has successfully used 100% ammonia fuel to produce architectural glass over two days of testing at its Yokohama Technical Center, with NOx emissions below environmental thresholds. The news follows successful ammonia co-firing tests to produce cement clinker by Mitsubishi UBE Cement Corporation.
Maritime ammonia: fuel delivery, emissions mitigation systems near readiness
This week, we explore three new onboard systems: the Mitsubishi Ammonia Supply and Safety System (MAmmoSS®), Singapore-based C-LNG Solutions’ new ammonia low flash point fuel supply system, and a new NOx emission mitigation system developed by Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Japan consortium to explore ammonia imports to Osaka
Mitsui & Co., Mitsui Chemicals, IHI Corporation and the Kansai Electric Power Company will explore the establishment of a hydrogen & ammonia supply chain based in Osaka. Ammonia fuel will be used to decarbonise electricity generation, and cracked to provide a feedstock for other industrial processes like steel-making. In South Korea, a similar partnership is evolving between LOTTE and Air Liquide. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines: forging ahead with a comprehensive strategy for maritime ammonia
Earlier this year, the Japanese shipping giant declared a strategic direction which included a substantial role for low carbon ammonia. Leakage-free bunkering & ammonia-ready newbuild vessels
In Japan, NYK and TBG will develop a new ammonia bunkering boom to help reduce ammonia leakage during fuel transfers. On the newbuild front, Stolt Tanker’s six newbuild vessels will have the option of being retrofitted for ammonia propulsion, including the recently delivered Bochem Houston. Wallenius’ four “next generation” vessels will be initially methanol powered, with the option to run on ammonia.
