Fortescue: Green Pioneer sails to Dubai for COP28

Following a successful engine retrofit, FFI’s dual fuel vessel debuted at COP28 this month. Unable to run on or carry ammonia fuel due to restrictions from local authorities, FFI Chairman Andrew Forrest called for the world’s ports to catch-up to technological progress and update their regulations. FFI will also be a key part of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub (one of seven hubs awarded funding by the US DoE), and has added to its vertical integration capabilities with the opening of a new technical innovation centre in the UK.

Topsoe & Allied Green Ammonia to develop export project in Northern Territory

Topsoe will deploy its new dynamic ammonia technology at Allied Green Ammonia’s under-development project on the Gove Peninsula, Northern Territory (and potentially its solid oxide electrolysis technology). Allied is targeting a production start in late 2028, with an initial capacity of more than 900,000 tonnes per year.

CCS-based ammonia exports from Australia & Canada to South Korea

Two mega-projects will establish CCS ammonia supply chains to South Korea for use as a power generation fuel. In Western Australia, Pilot Energy and new project partners Samsung C&T will develop the Mid West Clean Energy Project, while Hydrogen Canada Corp has announced a Korean offtaker for its production project near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta.

IHI joins Australian renewable ammonia consortium

IHI Corporation will join the North Queensland Clean Energy Project, a consortium developing a GW-scale electrolysis, ammonia production and export facility in north Queensland, Australia. Project partners include Idemitsu Australia, CS Energy and Energy Estate.

Renewable ammonia to support cotton farming in Australia

New Zealand-based Hiringa Energy and Australian group Sundown Pastoral will develop the Good Earth Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project (GEGHA), which will produce ammonia-based fertiliser & hydrogen for fuel cells to support cotton farming near Moree, New South Wales. The partners are already looking to expand to multiple production projects in the area.

Aboriginal Clean Energy Partnership: renewable ammonia production in Western Australia

The East Kimberley Clean Energy project will leverage the region’s solar & freshwater resources and an ‘export-ready’ harbour to create the renewable ammonia production hub. Construction is expected by the end of 2025, and production by the end of 2028. The project will be part owned & operated by traditional landowners.
