Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) has outlined a new subsidy program to help establish valleys or clusters for renewable hydrogen production. €1.2 billion in direct capital investment assistance will be allocated across a minimum of three projects, with an auction process to launch later this year.
Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy has launched a national roadmap for hydrogen, featuring a commercial pilot project on the Mediterranean coast that will produce renewable ammonia between 2025 and 2030. The Tunisian Chemical Group will use the ammonia to produce fertiliser.
CF Industries and ExxonMobil will move forward with a carbon capture and sequestration project at CF’s Yazoo City production complex in Mississippi, USA. The new, $100 million project will begin operations in 2028.
Yara has secured a long-term supply from ATOME’s Villeta project in Paraguay. Hydropower from the Itaipu Dam will power the production of electrolytic hydrogen, ammonia and then calcium ammonium nitrate fertiliser, which will be marketed and sold as part of Yara’s “Climate Choice” product line.
By 2030, Yara will supply 165,000 tons per year of “Yara Climate Choice fertilizers” to PepsiCo Europe for distribution to participating farmers. This volume will cover around 25% of PepsiCo’s fertilizer needs in Europe, focusing first on potato crops, and then moving into other key crops such as oats and corn.
The European Commission has approved a €122 million Lithuanian state grant to support AB AChema to decarbonise fertiliser production at its existing facility in Kaunas. A 171 MW electrolysis plant will be installed, producing enough renewable hydrogen to displace 30% of the current, gas-based feedstock used at the site.
Stamicarbon will provide its NX Stami Green technologies for a new renewable ammonia and fertilisers plant to be constructed in France. The FertigHy consortium plans to start construction in 2027, and will utilise new build renewable energy and back-up grid power for the facility.
More than $37 billion will be invested across the initial stages of hydrogen and ammonia production projects, ranging in location from the Gulf of Suez to west of the Nile Delta.
