Pilbara Ports is working to establish the Pilbara Clean Fuel Bunkering Hub, enabling port users to bunker locally-produced low carbon ammonia as a marine fuel. Our goal is for 100 per cent of bulk export vessels departing the Pilbara to be powered by clean fuels. This presentation analyses some of the findings from our initial workstreams, including the penalty costs for the Pilabar export fleet under the new IMO emission pricing framework, fuel demand forecasts, and anchorage options. The presentation coincides with the release of Pilbara Ports Authority’s new Clean Fuel Bunkering Hub Strategy.

Here, we explore in-depth the modifications made onboard the tugboat Sakigake to transform it from Japan’s first LNG-fueled vessel into Japan’s first ammonia-fueled vessel. Technical specifications, design challenges and emission results from early operations are all included. We also explore progress in two other areas: the construction and deployment of an ammonia-fueled, medium-sized gas carrier, and ammonia bunkering (development of both a bunker boom and barge vessel).

The Green Pioneer project has seen huge success in just a few short years, and included many important steps. From design, HAZID/HAZOP, AiP, certification and extensive testing, multiple sea trials have taken place in several global locations. Safety underpins both design and operational decisions made during the project, and emergency response and intervention capabilities are both well-established. *this presentation is not publicly available

As part of the Australia-Singapore Low-Emissions Technologies (ASLET) Initiative, the program will design, develop, and pilot a comprehensive safety training program for maritime and port operations personnel working with ammonia. A short course for workforce development will be established at the Australian Maritime College in Tasmania, with each module integrating theory with real-world practical activities to reinforce competence and confidence. Stakeholders are welcome to register their interest to be involved. *this presentation is not publicly available

The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) conducted a first-of-a-kind ammonia transfer pilot aimed at simulating bunkering procedures at anchorage in the waters of Port Dampier, Pilbara in September 2024. This spotlight session will share key takeaways from this pilot, including safety procedures, operational protocols, emergency responses measures. The session will also discuss how such pilots can pave the way for adoption of ammonia as a marine fuel across the region.
