India’s Oil & Natural Gas Corporation moves towards ammonia production

India’s state-owned oil and gas company ONGC will invest $13 billion to deploy 10 GW of renewable energy generation by 2030. At least 5 GW of this will be in Rajasthan, where ONGC and Greenko have an agreement to develop a million-tonne-per-year ammonia production facility. ONGC is considering a similar-sized ammonia facility in Karnataka, potentially powered with offshore wind.

Keppel Infrastructure & Incitec Pivot Ltd: renewable ammonia from Gladstone

The pair will develop an 850,000 tonnes per year renewable ammonia production facility in Queensland, Australia. The ammonia will be used domestically by IPL, exported to Singapore for use in Keppel’s under-development power generation projects, or sold to customers in Asia for energy needs. The source of the renewable hydrogen feedstock will be the nearby Central Queensland hydrogen mega-project. In other news, H2U will collaborate with the local first nations community on its own mega-project in the area: H2-Hub™ Gladstone.

Newfoundland updates: Project Nujio'qonik & the Port of Argentia

World Energy GH2’s Project Nujio’Qonik has a new partner, with SK ecoplant announcing a $50 million investment. Bloom Energy has also announced it will provide solid oxide electrolysis cells for the initial phase of the project. On the other side of Newfoundland, Pattern Energy is developing a renewable hydrogen & ammonia export facility at the Port of Argentia, with exports to Europe to begin from 2025.

The Glenfarne – Samsung Engineering partnership plans to deliver renewable ammonia projects in Chile and the US, guaranteeing current LNG customers access to ammonia fuel in the early stages of the energy transition. And, seeking to become a model for future renewable utility companies, PASH and ERIH will form a hydrogen & ammonia joint venture to develop production projects in Italy and Turkey.

Flexible ammonia synthesis: shifting the narrative around hydrogen storage

Flexible ammonia production technology is currently scaling up to meet the challenges of fluctuating electricity feedstock. The ability to ramp down plants to 5 - 10% of their nominal load will minimize the requirement for hydrogen storage buffers and reduce the overall cost of renewable ammonia production. The first demonstration-sized flexible ammonia plants are due to begin operations later this year.

Amp Energy: renewable ammonia in South Australia

Amp Energy will develop 5 GW of electrolyser capacity in Cape Hardy, South Australia. At full scale the project will produce 5 million tonnes of renewable ammonia per year for export. The precinct has ready access to renewable power, deepwater port infrastructure and undeveloped land.

Enbridge and Yara: CCS-based ammonia in Texas

Yara Clean Ammonia and Enbridge will jointly develop a CCS-based ammonia production facility in Corpus Christi, Texas. Located at the Enbridge Ingleside Energy Centre, as much as 1.4 million tonnes of ammonia per year will be produced, with Yara expected to act as full offtaker.

Although a globally significant ammonia producer, India still relies on ammonia & fertilizer imports to support its agricultural sector. In our recent episode of Ammonia Project Features, we explored the potential of domestically-produced renewable ammonia to both replace these imports and position India as an ammonia energy giant. Excellent solar PV resources, plentiful government support and access to “round-the-clock” renewables were all highlighted as key drivers for India to meet its renewable ammonia potential.
