RWE Supply & Trading will offtake 250,000 tons per year of AM Green Ammonia’s RFNBO-compliant ammonia from production sites in India. The ammonia is expected to be delivered from 2027.
Ohmium will develop 300 MW of PEM electrolyser capacity for SwitcH2’s offshore hydrogen and ammonia production vessel. Moored off the coast of southern Europe, the 268m-long vessel will be powered by nearshore renewable energy, and the electrolysers fed by desalinated seawater, producing enough ammonia to “fuel multiple oceangoing vessels for a full year”.
LONGi Hydrogen announced the delivery of four alkaline electrolyser units to ACWA Power’s 20 MW, renewable ammonia pilot project in Uzbekistan. To help finance the project, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development committed to a $65 million assistance package in August.
China’s National Development and Reform Commission has announced an official ammonia co-firing strategy to decarbonise power generation, aiming at achieving at least 10% co-firing by 2027. To address the gap between ammonia fuel demand and domestic production, multiple funding and permitting assistance programs are being led by the NDRC.
India-based integrated power utility Torrent Power Limited will invest over $7.6 billion in renewable energy generation and ammonia production in Gujarat. Momentum for renewable ammonia continues to build in India, with related news on certification and electrolyser manufacturing subsidies.
Pupuk Indonesia will collaborate with TOYO and ITOCHU to develop a hybrid renewable ammonia plant at an existing production facility in western Indonesia. Via a subsidiary, Pupuk will also supply renewable ammonia to PLN Indonesia Power’s co-firing demonstration project in west Java.
Meet MadoquaPower2X, which is developing a renewable hydrogen and ammonia project in Sines, southern Portugal. Starting from 2028, around 50,000 tons of renewable hydrogen will be produced to generate around 300,000 tons of decarbonized ammonia, targeting the maritime fuel and fertilizer markets in Europe and beyond.
Meet Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, a renewable ammonia developer focused on production projects in Namibia. Hyphen’s current focus is a project featuring up to 2 million tons of ammonia each year near Port Lüderitz on Namibia’s southwest coast. Hyphen has already secured multiple offtake contracts, and will supply European customers using Chane’s Port of Rotterdam import infrastructure.
First Ammonia has closed a successful Series B funding round, including contributions from Asian investors Mercuria Holdings and Manies Group. Funding will go directly towards the construction of First Ammonia’s renewable production plant near the Port of Victoria, Texas.
The governments of Australia and Germany have agreed to establish a bilateral H2Global tender, contributing €200 million each to a joint auction. The process will be similar to a recently-concluded pilot auction for long-term ammonia exports from Egypt to Rotterdam, and a just-launched Canadian scheme.
