In our June episode of Project Features, we were joined by World Energy GH2 to explore the major milestones of Project Nujio’qonik, an RFNBO-compliant ammonia project based on GW-scale wind power in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. FID on the project’s first phase is expected in 2025, producing 400,000 tons of ammonia per year for export to Europe.
Sungrow Hydrogen will provide alkaline electrolysers for a new hydrogen and ammonia project in Jilin province. China Energy Engineering Corporation is leading development of the project, which will produce 600,000 tons of renewable ammonia each year. In Inner Mongolia, construction has begun on a similar-sized plant, which will produce ammonia from wind and solar energy.
Abraxas Power is leading development of a new renewable hydrogen and ammonia project in Newfoundland on Canada’s eastern coast, powered by 3.5 GW of wind energy. EPC provider McDermott has been awarded a FEED contract.
The pair have agreed to deploy Talus’ modular, renewable powered ammonia production technology at the Capanda Green Ammonia Project in Angola. Fertilisers will be produced for the fast-growing domestic agricultural market in Angola, which currently does not have any primary fertiliser production capacity.
The pair have signed a supply agreement from Hygenco’s under-development, $2.5 billion renewable ammonia project in Gopalpur Port, Odisha. By establishing supply chains from India to Europe and Asia, the pair aim to capture a significant share of the developing global market for low-carbon ammonia.
IGNIS has signed a development MoU with local authorities for an 800,000 tons per year renewable ammonia project, to be completed in 2031. A €400 million partnership with investment firm KKR will assist project finance.
CertifHy has awarded RFNBO pre-certification to Greenko subsidiary AM Green for its under-development hydrogen and ammonia production facility in southern India. By 2030, Greenko aims for a capacity of one million tons per year of electrolytic hydrogen, feeding the production of 5 million tons per year of ammonia.
Spain-based FRV will develop a new $5 billion renewable hydrogen and ammonia project at the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex. At full capacity, 1.6 million tons of ammonia per year will be produced. FRV is now one of six organisations that have signed agreements with the state government of Ceará to develop production projects.
Yara’s newly commissioned plant at Herøya Industrial Park will produce 10 tons per day of renewable hydrogen, enabling the production of 20,000 tons of renewable ammonia per year.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India has released final details for the subsidy scheme, which will assist the decarbonisation of fertiliser production in India. Eleven renewable ammonia production projects will be matched to eleven fertiliser manufacturers in a reverse auction process, with annual tonnages and delivery schedules for ammonia already set.
