As shown in the IEA’s recently released Global Hydrogen Review 2024, the cumulative hydrogen production capacity reaching Final Investment Decision has doubled compared to last year. Promisingly, low-emission ammonia comprises a significant portion of both the mature project pipeline and secured offtake volume.
India-based integrated power utility Torrent Power Limited will invest over $7.6 billion in renewable energy generation and ammonia production in Gujarat. Momentum for renewable ammonia continues to build in India, with related news on certification and electrolyser manufacturing subsidies.
Pupuk Indonesia will collaborate with TOYO and ITOCHU to develop a hybrid renewable ammonia plant at an existing production facility in western Indonesia. Via a subsidiary, Pupuk will also supply renewable ammonia to PLN Indonesia Power’s co-firing demonstration project in west Java.
Meet MadoquaPower2X, a renewable hydrogen and ammonia project under development in Sines, southern Portugal. Starting from 2028, around 50,000 tons of renewable hydrogen will be produced to generate around 300,000 tons of decarbonized ammonia, targeting the maritime fuel and fertilizer markets in Europe and beyond.
Meet Hyphen Hydrogen Energy, a renewable ammonia developer focused on production projects in Namibia. Hyphen’s current focus is a project featuring up to 2 million tons of ammonia each year near Port Lüderitz on Namibia’s southwest coast. Hyphen has already secured multiple offtake contracts, and will supply European customers using Chane’s Port of Rotterdam import infrastructure.
First Ammonia has closed a successful Series B funding round, including contributions from Asian investors Mercuria Holdings and Manies Group. Funding will go directly towards the construction of First Ammonia’s renewable production plant near the Port of Victoria, Texas.
Ammonia developers Prumo and Fuella have secured land in Port do Açu, Brazil for the development of a 400,000 tons per-year renewable ammonia production plant. Set to come online in 2030, the ammonia produced from the integrated facility will be used both locally and for export to Europe.
As part of a new agreement with the Spanish government, Envision Energy will develop a fully integrated green industrial park in Spain, producing key renewable technologies for renewable hydrogen projects in Europe. In Namibia, Envision and Zhero will collaborate on a 500,000 tons per year renewable ammonia plant, to be located near Walvis Bay.
The trio has inaugurated their “dynamic” renewable ammonia plant in Ramme, Denmark. The facility aims to demonstrate cost-effective, fluctuating ammonia production based on variable power inputs.
AM Green Ammonia, a Greenko spinout entity focused on the production of renewable ammonia in India, announced that it has reached FID on the first phase of a multi-million ton per year plant.
