Europe-based developers Hynfra and Yamna have signed agreements with the Andhra Pradesh state renewable energy agency for the development of two renewable mega-projects, totalling 2 million tons of ammonia production capacity and $6 billion in investments.
Hiringa Energy, Sundown Pastoral Company and the NSW Government announced that financial close has been reached on the Good Earth Green Hydrogen and Ammonia (GEGHA) project in Moree, regional NSW. Project financing was provided by the National Australia Bank, with funding from the NSW state government.
The European Commission has unveiled the Hydrogen and Gas Market Directive which in addition to existing regulations on renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) set out in the Renewable Energy Directive, completes the policy framework for the sector on the European continent.
IRENA’s new market analysis forecasts a diverse landscape of commodity flows based on electrolytic hydrogen by 2050, with ammonia predicted to be both the most in-demand and the “most traded” of the hydrogen commodities. IRENA predicts flows of more than 100 million tons per year by mid-century, with major exporters to potentially include China and the USA.
Envision’s newly commissioned, AI-enabled, off-grid renewable ammonia production facility in Chifeng will produce 320,000 tons per year, with the first exports planned for Q4 this year.
Following the passage of new legislation in the USA, the timeline has been set for hydrogen and ammonia producers to benefit from 45V tax credits. Construction on renewable hydrogen projects must begin by January 1, 2028, providing a short window of opportunity, particularly for the regional Hydrogen Hubs.
Phase one of China Energy Engineering Group’s Songyuan project will come online this September, producing 200,000 tons per year of RFNBO-compliant ammonia. Ammonia produced in Songyuan (and Energy China’s other major renewable project in Chifeng) will be transported to Panjin Port, where Energy China co-owns a large-scale ammonia storage terminal.
The Coega Green Ammonia project, which is targeting a production capacity of 1 million tons per year once operational in 2029, has secured $20 million in development funding from SA-H2 Fund, as well as completing development of the Crossroads Green Energy project, a 1430 MW cluster of solar PV sites that will provide 40% of Coega’s power requirements.
