Offshore renewable ammonia production on the horizon
Article

SwitcH2 Offshore and CorPower Ocean will develop a 300,000 tons per year offshore renewable ammonia production facility in Portugal, expected to become operational by 2029. Two separate partnerships - Samsung Heavy Industries & Lloyd’s Register, and MISC & Gentari - are also exploring similar floating production projects.

RP Global: new ammonia mega-project in Argentina
Article

In the first stage of Project Gaucho, 3 GW of electrolysers will be powered by a 4.2 GW wind farm, leading to the production of up to 1.7 million tons of ammonia per year. RP Global and German development agency GIZ will develop the project, supported by an official German government program for ramping up the nascent hydrogen industry.

Harnessing wind power for ammonia on Canada’s Atlantic coast
Article

In our June episode of Project Features, we were joined by World Energy GH2 to explore the major milestones of Project Nujio’qonik, an RFNBO-compliant ammonia project based on GW-scale wind power in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. FID on the project’s first phase is expected in 2025, producing 400,000 tons of ammonia per year for export to Europe.

Renewable ammonia progresses in China
Article

Sungrow Hydrogen will provide alkaline electrolysers for a new hydrogen and ammonia project in Jilin province. China Energy Engineering Corporation is leading development of the project, which will produce 600,000 tons of renewable ammonia each year. In Inner Mongolia, construction has begun on a similar-sized plant, which will produce ammonia from wind and solar energy.

Renewable ammonia in China: full speed ahead
Article

China is keeping pace with IEA predictions for electrolyzer installations, with as much as 55% of the world’s total capacity to be installed there by 2028. Coupled with strong wind-power resources, domestic manufacturing capabilities and multiple economic drivers to transition away from coal-based ammonia production, China is ideally positioned to speed up the deployment of renewable ammonia projects.

Renewable ammonia exports from Brazil: Project Iracema
Article

In our latest episode of Ammonia Project Features, we explored Project Iracema: a grid-connected, renewable ammonia production facility under-development in Pecem, northeast Brazil. To discuss Brazil’s unique electricity market, project details and the important role of certification to the project, AEA Technology Manager Kevin Rouwenhorst was joined by Jonas Rechreche (Proton Ventures), Matheus Kleming (Casa dos Ventos) and Ricardo Gedra (CCEE).
