Japanese giants explore renewable ammonia production in Chile

As part of the HyEx project, Mitsui & Co., Toyo Engineering and Enaex will develop a solar-powered, 18,000 tonnes-per-year renewable ammonia plant in Tocopilla, northern Chile. Just outside of Tocopilla, Sumitomo and Chilean transmission utility Colbún have teamed up to explore renewable ammonia production & export. The pair will also assess million-tonne-per-year production in Chile’s south. Also in South America, Proton Ventures have contracted Fitchner to assess the feasibility of planned renewable production projects.

H2Carrier and wind project developer Anori will jointly develop Greenland’s first commercial wind farm, which will power the offshore production of ammonia via H2Carrier’s P2XFloater™ vessels. The project could produce as much as 900,000 tonnes of ammonia per year, targeting export markets. H2Carrier also announced that Larsen & Toubro will design & construct the “topside” sections of the P2XFloater™ vessels in India, with the hulls to be built in Asia.

Trinidad & Tobago launches roadmap to decarbonise hydrogen & ammonia production

Trinidad & Tobago’s National Energy Corporation, the Inter-American Development Bank and KBR have released their findings on how to establish a market for renewable hydrogen in the Caribbean country. Underpinned by a stepwise development of 57 GW of offshore wind power potential, the country could completely displace fossil-based hydrogen with renewable hydrogen in 2052. The 4 million tonnes-per-year production potential would meet industrial demands and lay the foundation for a significant export industry, potentially transforming Trinidad & Tobago into a global energy hub.

Maja Bendtsen (Port of Roenne), Jan Gramkov (Rambøll) and Nicklas Koch (DBI) presented the feasibility, safety management & public perception work currently in progress, as well as the steps still required to formalise a plan forward for the hub by 2025. Early & repeated engagement with the local community, rigorous & standardised assessment of potential risks and utilising learnings from other industries were all emphasized by the speakers as key to realising the project.

Yara & Northern Lights ink key CCS deal

Yara and Northern Lights have signed the world’s first commercial agreement for cross border CO2 transport and storage. Emissions from the Sluiskil production plant in the Netherlands will be captured, processed and transported for sequestration at the Northern Lights storage site off the coast of Norway. Yara is pursuing multiple decarbonisation options for the Sluiskil plant, including this CCS announcement, waste hydrogen, and offshore wind-to-hydrogen as part of Ørsted’s larger SeaH2Land project.
