AM Green Ammonia reaches FID for its first million tons of renewable ammonia production

AM Green Ammonia, a Greenko spinout entity focused on the production of renewable ammonia in India, announced that it has reached FID on the first phase of a multi-million ton per year plant. By late 2026, retrofits at the existing Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited complex will allow for the production of electrolytic hydrogen and ammonia, based on renewable electricity inputs from the Indian grid. CertifHy has already awarded RFNBO pre-certification to phase one of the project, including additionality requirements and hourly matching of renewables.

In total, AM Green Ammonia is targeting 5 million tons of production per year at Kakinada. AM Green has already agreed to offtake terms with Yara (50% of phase one volume), Keppel and Uniper, with the majority of phase one production volume headed to European markets. AM Green has also secured the electricity required for operations, including:
1300 MW round-the-clock carbon-free power enabled through 4500 MW solar & wind hybrid capacity, in combination with 950 MW of PSP capacity. A 25-year fixed-price power purchase agreement (PPA) with NTPC, covering half of the above, is already in place. The remaining capacity is expected to be supplied by Gentari.

Electrolysers will be provided by partner John Cockerill, which is establishing a GW-scale factory in Kakinada. Via parent company Greenko, subsidies for electrolyser production in Kakinada have already been secured. AM Green indicates that – via the use of extensive pumped hydro resources – up to 90% utilisation of John Cockerill’s alkaline electrolysers will be achieved, “making this one of the most innovative and cost-efficient green ammonia projects globally”.
