In Brazil, fertiliser manufacturer Atlas Agro and sugar producer Tereos have entered into a long-term partnership which will see Atlas supply low-carbon fertilisers for sugarcane production. The fertiliser will be produced at Atlas’ low carbon fertilizer facility, the Uberaba Green Fertilizer plant, in Triângulo Mineiro (MG), which is currently under development.
The Uberaba Green Fertilizer plant will produce “liquid and granulated ammonium nitrate fertiliser” from renewable energy-based hydrogen and ammonia. With an investment value of about$1 billion, the plant will produce about 500,000 tons of low carbon fertiliser per year.
According to the company’s announcement, Atlas Agro’s low carbon fertilisers reduce emissions by up to 99% compared to conventional fertilizers. The supply agreement will enable Tereos to replace about 30% of its nitrogen consumption in sugarcane production, significantly cutting annual CO₂ emissions and reducing import dependency. According to its website, Tereos has a production capacity of over 300,000 hectares of sugarcane in Brazil, making it one of the largest companies in the world’s biggest sugarcane producing-nation.
This agreement is an advance for the entire agricultural chain, reducing emissions, strengthening national production and aligning with Brazil’s energy transition. The energy that decarbonizes. The food that sustains.
