Contributing to low-emission nitriles manufacturing
The pair will explore a million-ton-per-year ammonia production plant at an undisclosed US location, based on CCS hydrogen production. Few details are available at this early stage, but the pair have already committed to a 2026 FID, with commercial operations to begin in 2030. The plant will be a “potentially important contributor” to INEOS Nitriles’ emission reduction targets, as ammonia is a key feedstock for acrylonitrile manufacturing. INEOS Nitriles has a number of operating acrylonitrile plants, including Green Lake (Texas) and Lima (Ohio) in the USA, and Koeln in Germany.
Our collaboration with INEOS Nitriles is aimed at strengthening our strategic foothold in the global ammonia market and addressing the growing worldwide demand for clean ammonia solutions. The production of industrial materials using clean ammonia aligns well with our commitment to key sustainability principles. This technological advancement will be a pivotal turning point in realizing Hanwha’s vision for a sustainable future.

This project is a potentially important contributor to INEOS Nitriles’ carbon emission reduction targets in 2030 and its net zero ambitions by 2050. This project would be a significant step towards a leadership position in low-carbon Acrylonitrile supply of which ammonia with low-carbon emissions is a key raw material. INEOS positions itself to find solutions to the challenges the world is facing and is looking forward to achieving a net zero economy whilst both continuing to deliver products that are essential to society and remaining competitive.

Covestro, OCI
Low-emission ammonia for acrylonitrile manufacturing is being pursued by several players. In Germany, polymer giant Covestro has already signed an offtake contract with Fortescue for the supply of low-emissions ammonia to Germany, commencing as soon as possible. Also in Europe, OCI has agreed to supply AnQore (Netherlands) and Elix Polymers (Spain) with low-emission ammonia to decarbonise their respective polymer supply chains.
