Poland-based developer Hynfra has signed a framework agreement with the government of Mauritania for a renewable hydrogen and ammonia project near the capital city Nouakchott. The $1.5 billion project will produce 100,000 tons per year of renewable ammonia in the first phase, operational from 2030. Feasibility studies will begin this year, with FEED work to be carried out in 2027-28. More than 550 MW of solar and wind generating capacity will power around 170 MW of installed electrolysers, located near the state-owned Port of Nouakchott, enabling easy access to regional and international markets. The ammonia production complex will be built to the south of Somelec wind farm: Mauritania’s first-ever wind project.
Mauritania, thanks to the combination of high solar irradiation and strong, stable winds, has some of the best conditions in the world for the development of renewable energy. Combined with a century of Polish experience in ammonia synthesis, this creates a unique opportunity to build a project of global significance. All this is possible thanks to the vision of the Mauritanian government and its Hydrogen Code, which is among the most advanced in the world.
Tomoho Umeda, General Director of Mauritania Green Ammonia and President of Hynfra, in his organisation’s official press release, 10 Sept 2025
Mauritania’s strategic position near global shipping routes and world-class renewable energy potential has attracted multiple development consortia for ammonia production. CWP Global, Green Energy Park, and Masdar are all considering projects in the west African nation.
The project adds to a growing portfolio for Hynfra:
- the similarly-sized Jordan Green Ammonia
- Hellenic Green Hydrogen, near the Port of Kavala in Greece
- a 400,000 tons per year project in southern Egypt on the Red Sea
- Green Ammonia Oman, to be located near the Port of Duqm
Hynfra also signed a recent development agreement with Yamna for two mega-scale renewable projects in the state of Andhra Pradesh, India, totaling 2 million tons per year of ammonia.
