John Cockerill and Vietnam-based The Green Solutions will partner up to develop the Tra Vinh hydrogen and ammonia production project. John Cockerill will provide its pressurized alkaline electrolysis technology, and potentially provide operational, maintenance and training services. The MoU was signed during an official Belgian state visit to Vietnam.
The Tra Vinh project was first launched in early 2022. Located on the southern Vietnamese coastline in the Mekong Delta, the facility will feature 240 MW of installed alkaline electrolysis, powered by 600 MW of combined offshore wine, onshore solar and battery energy storage. EPC work is due to be finalized mid year, and the first molecules produced from late 2026. 182,500 tons of renewable ammonia will be produced per year.
Since 2022, The Green Solutions has announced partnerships with:
- German federal development agency GIZ
- Vietnamese utility Pha Lai Thermal Power to explore decarbonization of its 1 GW of installed coal power capacity
- Standard Chartered Bank for financial advisory services
- Keppel Infrastructure
- And announced the beginning of construction at Tra Vinh in March 2023
