“Jordan Green Ammonia”: a new ammonia partnership in the Middle East
By Geofrey Njovu on July 17, 2023
Poland-based Hynfra and Jordan-based Fidelity Group have teamed up to form Jordan Green Ammonia. The new entity will develop a renewable ammonia production facility with annual capacity in the range 100, 000 – 200, 000 tonnes. The facility will be located at the tip of the Gulf of Aqaba in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) in Jordan. The ASEZ is a well-positioned hub for business in the fertiliser and marine fuels and related sectors, and is situated in a key shipping location (adjacent to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Suez).
The project will include a 530 MW solar farm, an energy storage facility, electrolysers of unspecified capacity, and a water desalination plant. Besides ammonia, the project will generate other products including hydrogen, oxygen, industrial steam, and “green” heat. Most of the ammonia will be exported to the EU, with some to be supplied to the local market. The plant is expected to be operational within five years.
Hynfra has expertise in the design and development of renewable hydrogen and ammonia, green energy and renewable heat projects (including an ammonia collaboration with Tsubame BHB). Fidelity Group manages investments in the oil and chemicals sector, with partnerships throughout the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region. The two partners will seek to apply their complementary skills in their new venture.
We are very happy about this international cooperation. Both parties bring their unique expertise to the new entity. Fidelity has extensive experience in building chemical plants and knowledge of hydrogen engineering. Hynfra is a partner with a massive competence base and unique knowledge and contacts in the area of green hydrogen and ammonia.
Marlena Krohn, Hynfra’s MD and Jordan Green Ammonia VP in Hynfra’s official press release, 26 June 2023
We are optimistic about the potential of green ammonia production in Jordan. Thanks to the close distance to the port of Aqaba, the transport of our products will be easy and efficient. This will allow us to reach both local markets and export to other regions, including Europe. Jordan has excellent solar conditions and strongly focuses on the development of renewable energy sources. The country is now finalizing its hydrogen strategy, which perfectly dovetails with our project.
