Lantmännen – northern Europe’s leading agricultural cooperative that owns multiple food brands – has signed a three year agreement with Sweden-based dairy cooperative Arla for fossil-free fertilizers, with the number of farms and volumes supplied/used to be increased gradually over the agreement.
Lantmännen is involved in fossil-free fertilizers on several fronts: in early 2022, it signed a commercial agreement with Yara to market and distribute Yara’s low-emission products; while in early 2024 Lantmännen, Fertiberia, and Nordion Energi announced a partnership to establish Sweden’s first fossil-free fertilizer production facility, based on hydrogen production powered by Norway’s hydro-dominated grid. Lantmännen indicates that fossil-free fertilizers used in its partnerships will have 70–90 percent lower climate impact than conventional products.
Lantmännen is constantly looking for partners to scale up fossil-free solutions in Swedish agriculture. In Arla, we have found a bold company that is driving development in the dairy industry. Real change requires major players in the food chain to take responsibility. When influential companies take the lead, important conditions are created for more sustainable food production throughout the country.
Claes Johansson, Head of Sustainability at Lantmännen, in his organisation’s official press release, 30 Apr 2025
Through the collaboration with Lantmännen and the investment in fossil-free mineral fertilizer, we are taking another concrete step towards even more sustainable milk production. It is an important part of our long-term climate and environmental work. Our sustainability program FarmAhead enables us to accelerate the green transition on farms. Through investments in fossil-free mineral fertilizers and other initiatives that reduce climate emissions and promote biodiversity.

OCI has begun supplying German chemical manufacturer Lanxess with “lower-emission ammonia” for use at Lanxess’ Leverkusen site. Supplied from OCI’s Rotterdam ammonia distribution hub, the production pathway and origin of the ammonia is not yet disclosed.
In a new strategic partnership with German agricultural cooperative Raiffeisen Waren-Zentrale Rhein-Main AG (RWZ), OCI will supply lower carbon fertilizers for the “KlimaPartner Landwirtschaft” carbon farming program. Lower carbon calcium ammonium nitrate, lower carbon nitrogen-sulfur fertilizer will be produced using biogas, resulting in up to 60% lower CO₂ emissions during production.
In winter wheat cultivation, OCI’s lower carbon fertilizers offer the greatest potential for CO2 reduction. RWZ and OCI look forward to the project’s growth and warmly welcome future farmers to join.
