Partners in the Neom Green Hydrogen project have announced that construction of the 1.2 million tons per year renewable hydrogen project in the Neom region in northwest Saudi Arabia is 80% complete across all sites. This includes the wind and solar farms, a dedicated transmission grid and green hydrogen facility. The update highlighted that key equipment such as wind turbines, electrolysers, hydrogen storage vessels, the cold box and pipe racks are being received and installed.
The project, which is an equal three-way joint venture by Air Products, NEOM and Acwa Power, reached financial close in May 2023, with a total investment value of $8.4 billion. It will be powered by a combined capacity of 2.2 GW of solar energy and 1.6 GW of wind energy. The partners estimate that the wind and solar generation will be complete by mid 2026, with electrolyser commissioning and first ammonia availability following shortly thereafter in 2027.
Air Products, which is also the EPC contractor and system integrator, will also act as the exclusive offtaker of the produced ammonia over a 30-year period. The project will also feature a dedicated jetty for renewable ammonia transportation.
