Ohmium to develop PEM electrolysers for floating ammonia production

300 MW capacity project being led by SwitcH2
US-based Ohmium will develop “PEM electrolyser solutions” for a 300 MW-scale offshore hydrogen and ammonia production project. Led by Netherlands-based SwitcH2, the project consortium will establish an industrial-scale floating facility based on existing Floating Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel designs. Moored off the coast of southern Europe, the 268m-long facility will be powered by “nearshore” solar and wind power, and the electrolysers fed by desalinated seawater. 300,000 tons of ammonia production per year will be enough to “fuel multiple oceangoing vessels for a full year”.
Ohmium’s compact, hyper modular PEM electrolyzers are ideally suited for the space constrained FPSO setting. Their product delivers high efficiency, and the comprehensive, standardized design enables flexible and rapid installation, at scale.

We appreciate the expertise that SwitcH2 Joint Venture brings to offshore floating production, and their vision in leveraging renewables and green hydrogen for the creation of green ammonia. The market for green ammonia is poised to grow exponentially in the coming decades, especially as a source of clean fuel for the global shipping industry, and Ohmium is looking forward to collaborating with SwitcH2 in helping address that need.

The ammonia produced will eventually be offloaded onto an ammonia carrier for transport to offtakers. With support from the Dutch government (€3 million grant) and AiP for the facility design granted by DNV in May 2023, SwitcH2 anticipates renewable ammonia production to begin by 2029. Ohmium is part of a 2GW-plus renewable hydrogen project pipeline around the world, including a new ammonia & fertilisers plant in Mexico.
