Prumo and Fuella: renewable ammonia production in Brazil
By Geofrey Njovu on September 19, 2024
Brazil-based Prumo is developing an integrated renewable hydrogen and ammonia production facility at the Porto do Açu in the north of Rio de Janeiro state. The group recently signed a land reservation agreement with Norwegian renewable hydrogen and ammonia developer Fuella.
The pair will jointly build a 520 MW capacity renewable ammonia plant. This will produce about 400,000 tons per-year of renewable ammonia both for export and local use. In signing the MoU, the two parties have the support of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, a strategic partner of Port do Açu.
Covering 1 million square metres, the Port do Açu area features ready water availability and export infrastructure (including a bulk liquid terminal). It is also part of Brazil’s interconnected national grid system, which enables access to renewable energy (and hydrogen production) compatible with stringent markets such as the EU.
The Port is expected to become an export corridor for renewable ammonia from Brazil to Europe. FID for this project is expected within the next 4 years, with production commencing in 2030.
This is Fuella’s first agreement in Brazil. It follows the company’s completion of debt financing for its Skipavika Green Ammonia (SkiGA) project, a large-scale greenfield renewable ammonia project in Norway in June. The plant is expected to produce 100,000 tons per year of renewable ammonia, once completed in 2026.
The development of this plant will contribute to global efforts in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy. We have a prepared ecosystem and competitive advantages for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia, both for export and for supplying the Brazilian domestic market.
Mauro Andrade, Executive Director of Business Development at Prumo, in his organisation’s official press release, 23 August 2024
This is a landmark agreement for us, in expanding our portfolio of projects internationally, to highly competitive and attractive regions. We believe that Porto do Açu is a fantastic location and partner for us. The winning factors for us were not only the site and the infrastructure in place, but also the dedication, competence and support of the team.
