Transforming Risavika into a hub for ammonia bunker fuel

Iverson eFuels, Port of Stavanger, ASCO Norge, and St1 partner up
Located on Norway’s south-western coast, Risavika is currently a significant offshore oil & gas hub, with an estimated 2,000 port calls from vessels each year. A new Scandinavian collaboration aims to transform Risavika and the wider Stavanger region as a bunkering hub for ammonia fuel, supplied by Iverson eFuels’ hydro-ammonia production project in Sauda. Production of ammonia fuel at Sauda (200,000 tons per year) will displace a significant amount of fossil fuels currently sold and used in the region for transportation.
The partners bring expertise from across the entire ammonia fuel value chain. The Port of Stavanger will host bunkering hub infrastructure, and takes a “long-term perspective” on investments and development projects at its three associated ports. Logistics provider ASCO already operates supply bases in the area for the oil & gas industry, and St1 is a Finland-based energy group with a large existing customer base for fuels. Iverson eFuels is a joint venture from Hy2gen, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and Trafigura.
There are nearly 2,000 port calls at Risavika each year, and these could become emission-free with green ammonia from Sauda. We are excited to collaborate with forward-thinking companies that can help bring our ammonia to market.

Using ammonia as fuel will require new infrastructure, such as storage tanks and bunkering facilities at the port. ASCO is ready to establish such facilities, ensuring that this is done in a safe and sustainable manner. In this partnership, we will conduct risk assessments and ensure that the facility meets national safety standards and regulations.

St1 is in close dialogue with operators and end customers. Together with our partners, we will promote knowledge about ammonia as a fuel and ensure that we can supply it once shipowners have installed ammonia engines on their vessels.

Around the coastline and located in the Oslo Fjord, ExxonMobil’s Slagen terminal is also being explored as a future location for ammonia bunkering and exports. Grieg Edge, North Ammonia, and GreenH are all partners in the project, which aims to take advantage of the high vessel traffic – more than 10,000 vessels pass through the Oslo Fjord every year.
