Transhydrogen Alliance to invest $2 billion in Brazil
By Julian Atchison on November 04, 2021
The Transhydrogen Alliance – a consortium formed this year by Proton Ventures, Trammo DMCC and Varo Energy – will invest $2 billion in green hydrogen production at the Pecém Complex in the Brazilian state of Ceará (Spanish language).
The project’s aim is to produce 500,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen, which will be converted to 2.5 million tonnes of green ammonia for import to Europe via the Port of Rotterdam (and in the process meeting the Transhydrogen Alliance’s stated annual import goal for green ammonia).
“This is a very important moment in our mission here in Europe. Each of these companies has expertise in a particular area (production of H2V and green ammonia, logistics, storage, transport). From now on, the study phases for project implementation will begin. The consortium sees Ceará as having great potential for the production of sustainable energy”, said Governor Camilo Santana.

The Ceará Green Hydrogen HUB
The Ceará Green Hydrogen HUB, installed in the Pecém Industrial and Port Complex, was launched this year in partnership with the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) and the Federation of Industries of Ceará (Fiec). The idea is to seek to reduce the emission of pollutants with new investments and expand business opportunities and job creation in Ceará, in order to boost the state’s economy. Green hydrogen (H2V) is produced from renewable sources and is currently considered the mainstay of transformation.
So far, 11 memorandums of understanding have been signed with national and international companies for the implementation of projects at the State’s Green Hydrogen HUB. “This is an important step towards the decarbonization of the world. We are in a great task force to transform Ceará into a HUB of Green Hydrogen, which is the fuel of the Future. The whole world is looking for alternatives to reduce the emission of pollutants. In addition, we will change the socioeconomic reality of Ceará with new job and income opportunities for the people of Ceará”, concluded Governor Camilo Santana.

The ultimate goal is to produce 15 million tonnes of green hydrogen every year by 2030 at the Pecém Complex. Of interest among these eleven MoUs:
- Fortescue Future Industries signed an agreement for a $6 billion hydrogen production facility, to begin operating by 2025,
- Qair Brasil commited to a $6.95 billion project: a 1.2 GW offshore wind park to power 2.2 MW of electrolysers and 296,000 tonnes of green hydrogen production per year, and
- Australia-based Enegix agreed to a $5.4 billion project featuring 3.4 GW of renewable energy generation.
