VTTI: open season for Project Amplifhy in Rotterdam and Antwerp
By Julian Atchison on January 14, 2025
Network of ammonia import terminals and crackers to be developed
Energy storage provider VTTI is currently receiving expressions of interest from potential customers for capacity reservation and allocation for both ammonia storage and cracking. VTTI is planning two ammonia import terminals in Rotterdam and Antwerp as part of Project Amplifhy: a future network of ammonia import terminals across Europe. The first two terminals will be based at VTTI’s existing facilities in both ports, and Amplifhy has been designated a “Project of Common Interest” by the European Commission (€11.6 million in co-funding has already been awarded for development of the Rotterdam terminal).
In line with both the EU Gas Regulation and EU Gas Directive, the ongoing open season is run in a non-discriminatory, transparent process. Interested parties can submit a non-binding expression of interest before February 28, 2025. Later this year VTTI will outline a formal participatory process with stakeholders, building towards firm commitments for ammonia imports into Europe.
Hydrogen is central to the energy transition, and the strategic location of our terminals in Rotterdam and Antwerp give us unparalleled potential to lead in this space. With the launch of this Open Season, we are taking a bold step towards creating a hydrogen hub that will drive Europe’s decarbonization goals and empower a sustainable energy future.

One of many import projects underway
Amplifhy is one of a number of ammonia import projects underway in the Port of Rotterdam. Considered the energy gateway to Europe, the Port of Rotterdam aims to facilitate a total of 20 million tons of hydrogen equivalent throughput each year by 2050 (split into 18 million tons of imports, and 2 million tons of local production). Although OCI Global is currently the only ammonia terminal operator in Rotterdam (with a near four-fold ammonia storage expansion plan already underway), new import projects include VTTI’s Amplifhy, ACE Terminal, Air Products & Gunvor, GES & Gunvor, and Chane. Antwerp will be home to a new import terminal being developed by Fluxys and Advario, and is also the base for the HyBex project, a pilot trading hub that will enable a hydrogen market in Belgium.
