    Once operational, the Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners-led Murchison Green Hydrogen project will receive AU$814 million in hydrogen production credits from the Australian government as part of the Hydrogen Headstart program. Nearly 1.8 million tons of renewable ammonia per year will be produced, primarily for export to Asian markets.

    New green maritime corridor to link Portugal with northern Europe

    Madoqua and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines will lead development of the corridor. Industry partners in the consortium include financiers, terminal operators, Port authorities, alternative fuel producers and offtakers. The transportation of liquified CO2 along the corridor will help establish a supply chain for sequestration of carbon emissions in Norway at Horisont Energi’s Gismarvik CO2 hub.

    AES Chile has submitted its EIA to government authorities for Project Inna, making it one of only a handful of proposed renewable ammonia projects in Chile currently at the key permitting stage. In other news, Mejillones Ammonia Energy will build a new wastewater treatment plant to secure water supplies for its Project Volta, and three mega-projects in the southern Magallanes region have been granted maritime concessions for terminal construction.

    Set to produce 900,000 tons per year of renewable ammonia powered by 3.7 GW of combined wind and solar energy, CIP’s Helax project in Mexico is set to come online in 2028. In Newfoundland and Labrador, CIP has acquired a 90% stake in a large-scale, onshore wind-powered renewable hydrogen project.

    TotalEnergies, Eren, CIP and A.P. Moller have launched a large-scale renewable energy project which will feature solar-powered electrolytic hydrogen and ammonia production in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region near the Atlantic coast in Morocco. State-owned fertiliser giant OCP Group has also signed agreements with Engie, Bpifrance and the French Development Agency to develop renewable projects and sustainable agriculture in Morocco.

    AustriaEnergy announced that it has successfully submitted an environmental impact study covering the first phase of its ammonia mega-project HNH Energy, and expects to receive approval by late 2025.     Launched in 2022, MAIRE Tecnimont will complete FEED for the MadoquaPower2X project in Sines, Portugal, as well as an EPC proposal for construction. The project will feature up to 1 GW of alkaline electrolysis capacity, feeding the production of 300,000 tons per year of ammonia. Terminal facilities will include large-scale storage, enabling the export of ammonia to northwest Europe.

    As the maritime industry gears towards the use of more sustainable fuels, Denmark-based cargo pump supplier Svanehoj reports increased orders for ammonia-capable equipment to be used on LPG tankers. Navantia and H2SITE will combine their expertise in shipbuilding and ammonia cracking to create hydrogen-based propulsion systems. Thyssenkrupp Uhde’s ammonia technology will be used in SwitcH2’s floating ammonia production vessels to harness offshore wind energy. And Iverson eFuels will use ECOnnects’ jettyless gas transfer technology at its 200,000 tonnes per year ammonia production facility in Norway.

    APA Group and Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy and Fertilisers (WesCEF) have signed a new MoU to investigate the potential of feeding renewable hydrogen to existing ammonia production facilities in Kwinana, near Perth. Sections of APA’s existing Parmelia Gas Pipeline are being assessed for conversion to carry 100% hydrogen. If successful, the pipeline could become a “pure renewable hydrogen service”. In Kwinana, plans are already underway for multiple newbuild hydrogen & ammonia projects.

    The new project will be built in Sauda on Norway's southwestern coast and owned by Hy2gen, Trafigura and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Hy2gen is already developing a similar hydro-ammonia project in Quebec. The plant at Sauda - dubbed the Iverson eFuels project - will feature 240 MW of electrolyser capacity, producing 600 tonnes per day (or more than 200,000 tonnes per year) green ammonia via renewable electricity. Similar to the Quebec project, the partners indicate the produced green ammonia is destined for use as maritime fuel.

    Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Fertiberia and Vestas will partner with Enagás (who own Spain's national gas grid) & Naturgy (a Spanish gas & electricity utility) to develop a hydrogen and ammonia mega project in the Aragon region, Spain. At full size, 5 GW of combined wind & solar generating capacity will power 2 GW of electrolysers that produce around 160,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year. Construction of Phase I is due to start at the end of 2023, and includes plans for a state-of-the-art green ammonia production facility that will feed Fertiberia's existing fertiliser plant in Sagunto.
