CF Industries & POSCO: US-based ammonia production for the Asian market
Japan consortium to explore ammonia imports to Osaka
Mitsui & Co., Mitsui Chemicals, IHI Corporation and the Kansai Electric Power Company will explore the establishment of a hydrogen & ammonia supply chain based in Osaka. Ammonia fuel will be used to decarbonise electricity generation, and cracked to provide a feedstock for other industrial processes like steel-making. In South Korea, a similar partnership is evolving between LOTTE and Air Liquide. You can learn more about the emerging nexus between ammonia cracking and steel-making at our upcoming annual conference in Atlanta, USA.
Progress in Oman mega-projects
Hydrom (Hydrogen Oman) has signed commercial term sheets and allocated land to a series of important ammonia export projects being developed in the Gulf nation. Green Energy Oman is one of three project consortia granted land near Duqm in the country’s south, with further allocations expected in the coming months. Also in Duqm, ENGIE & POSCO have launched a million-tonne-per-year ammonia production project, with the full production output to be exported to Korea over the forty year operational lifetime of the plant.
India: renewable developments
In Indian developments this week:
- Avaada Group and the Rajasthan state government will jointly develop a $5 billion, million-tonne-per-year renewable ammonia plant in the city of Kota.
- Multinational Larsen & Toubro has switched on a new renewable hydrogen plant for its Hazira manufacturing complex in Gujarat.
- Korean steelmaker POSCO and Greenko have signed an MoU to cooperate in green hydrogen and ammonia production in India.
- And at our recent Australia conference, IEEFA’s Kashish Shah outlined how renewable hydrogen & ammonia can relieve the burden of US$13 billion in subsidies paid every year to the fertiliser sector in India.
ACWA Power and POSCO join forces on ammonia
Saudi-based ACWA Power and South Korean-based POSCO will join forces to develop new hydrogen and ammonia production projects, with an eye towards decarbonising POSCO’s power generation and steel making activities in South Korea. The pair are already significant players in the ammonia energy space, with POSCO setting ambitious goals for production & imports, and ACWA involved in multiple mega-projects in the Middle East.
H2biscus: green ammonia in Malaysia
A trio of South Korean organisations - Samsung Engineering, POSCO and Lotte Chemical - will partner with the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) to develop a new green hydrogen & ammonia project in Bintulu, eastern Malaysia. The combination of plentiful hydropower, existing gas infrastructure and existing petrochemical production facilities in Bintulu means the H2biscus partners are focusing on a suite of export products - hydrogen, ammonia & methanol - with both green and blue characteristics.
H2 Challenge launched to fund hydrogen & ammonia innovation
Applications are now open for the H2 Challenge - an initiative set to identify the best hydrogen-related projects from across the globe for funding support. The Challenge is open for applications from: International startups from Pre-Seed to Series C+ stages, university teams/academia and strategic partners (established SMEs) that develop hardware and/or software solutions across multiple use cases and projects within the hydrogen value chain - Production, Transportation & Storage, End-use Applications, Carbon Capture Utilisation & Storage, or Ammonia Applications.
Doosan Heavy Industries, POSCO and RIST to develop ammonia gas turbines
Two members of the newly-launched Korean Green Ammonia Alliance - Doosan and POSCO - signed an MoU this week with the Pohang-based Research Institute of Industrial Science & Technology (RIST) to develop "Clean Ammonia-Fueled Gas Turbines".
The Korean Green Ammonia Alliance
Thirteen private organisations and five public institutions joined together this week to form South Korea's Green Ammonia Alliance. The Alliance's key aim is to work towards carbon neutrality for Korea by 2050.
The Ammonia Wrap: two new large-scale ammonia projects in the UAE and more
Welcome to the Ammonia Wrap: a summary of all the latest announcements, news items and publications about ammonia energy. This week: two new large-scale ammonia projects in the UAE, RWE, BASF combine for 2 GW "Offshore-to-X" project, green ammonia exports from Tasmania, coal co-combustion trials in Japan, Japanese shipping industry chases decarbonisation, South Korean companies join together in local green ammonia consortium, new funding for ammonia-from-wastewater research and Horisont Energi and Equinor join forces for the Polaris project.
The Korean New Deal and ammonia energy
South Korea has featured in many Ammonia Energy news updates, but often in a scatter gun fashion that lacked the momentum of ammonia energy announcements coming from the other side of the Korea Strait. Now, South Korea is ready to step out from Japan’s shadow as a clean energy innovator and deployer in its own right. We’re seeing the beginnings of a well-articulated strategy to achieve society-wide decarbonisation in South Korea, with a starring role for clean hydrogen and clean ammonia.
