Expected to become commercially available in 2025, WinGD’s X-DF-A ammonia powered engines will be fitted on Samsung Heavy Industries’ newbuild vessels. Eastern Pacific Shipping expects its ammonia powered Newcastlemaxes and VLAC fleet to be delivered from 2026 onwards, after signing a series of agreements with MAN Energy Solutions and other key partners.

Doosan Enerbility to export ammonia co-firing tech to Indonesia

Korea-based Doosan Enerbility and Indonesia Power will partner up to deploy ammonia co-firing technology at the Suralaya Power Plant in Java. The newly-commissioned Jawa 9 & 10 generating units will be converted, with studies into a full ammonia supply chain and technical requirements to be completed by 2027 - the same year Doosan is targeting for commercialisation of its co-firing burner technology.

Asahi Glass Corporation announced it has successfully used 100% ammonia fuel to produce architectural glass over two days of testing at its Yokohama Technical Center, with NOx emissions below environmental thresholds. The news follows successful ammonia co-firing tests to produce cement clinker by Mitsubishi UBE Cement Corporation.

Japan consortium to explore ammonia imports to Osaka

Mitsui & Co., Mitsui Chemicals, IHI Corporation and the Kansai Electric Power Company will explore the establishment of a hydrogen & ammonia supply chain based in Osaka. Ammonia fuel will be used to decarbonise electricity generation, and cracked to provide a feedstock for other industrial processes like steel-making. In South Korea, a similar partnership is evolving between LOTTE and Air Liquide.
