$7 billion in funding, new roadmap for the US hydrogen industry
The Biden administration has launched a $7 billion funding program to create regional clean hydrogen hubs across the US. Between six and ten applications will be selected, drawing on a diverse range of geographical locations, technology pathways and end-use applications. Alongside the funding announcement, the Department of Energy launched a draft of a new national hydrogen roadmap, outlining the key opportunities on offer for the emerging US clean hydrogen industry.

First Ammonia announces deal for 5GW of Topsoe electrolysers
US-based First Ammonia has announced a new reservation deal with Topsoe for delivery of solid-oxide electrolysers. Initially, First Ammonia will purchase 500 MW of SOECs from Topsoe’s new manufacturing plant in Herning, Denmark, with the option to expand to 5 GW over the lifetime of the agreement. That initial 500 MW will be deployed over two First Ammonia production projects, both targeting commercial operations in 2025: one in northern Germany, and one in southwest USA.

More CCS projects announced for the US Gulf Coast
New US CCS ammonia announcements include: a new million-tonne-per-year facility for OCI in Texas, a new $2 billion production facility for CF Industries and Mitsui & Co. in Louisiana, multi-million-tonnes-per-year of production output for JERA, ConocoPhillips and Uniper on the Gulf Coast spread over multiple export projects, and FID reached for OCI’s decarbonisation project in Iowa.

Maritime ammonia: FSRBs, AiPs for bunkering and a new collaboration
In maritime ammonia updates this week:
- NYK Line, Nihon Shipyard, ClassNK, and IHI Corporation have signed a joint R&D agreement for the commercialisation of an ammonia floating storage and regasification barge (A-FSRB).
- DNV has granted Approval in Principle to Azane Fuel Solutions for their flexible ammonia bunkering terminal design. The Approval allows Azane and partner Yara to proceed with their bunker network rollout across Scandinavia.
- And US-based Amogy & Amon Maritime will collaborate to jointly develop ammonia-powered shipping solutions, including the use of Amogy’s technology platform in Amon’s future projects.
